Anti-Kerry film to air in prime-time

Nation's largest TV chain orders all 62 stations to show movie without commercials next week.
October 11, 2004: 1:24 PM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of the largest chain of television stations in the nation, plans to air a documentary that accuses Sen. John Kerry of betraying American prisoners during the Vietnam War, a newspaper reported Monday.

The network has ordered all 62 of its stations to air "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" without commercials in prime-time next week, the Washington Post said, just two weeks before the Nov. 2 election.

Sinclair's television group, which includes affiliates of all the major networks, reaches nearly a quarter of all U.S. television households, according to the company's Web site. But the affiliates owned by the major television networks reach a larger percentage of U.S. homes because they are in the largest markets.

A dozen of Sinclair's stations are in the critical swing states of Ohio, Florida, Iowa and Wisconsin.

The company made news in April when it ordered seven of its ABC-affiliated stations not to air a "Nightline" segment that featured a reading of the names of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq; a Sinclair executive called that broadcast "contrary to the public interest."

Calls to Sinclair by CNN/Money were not immediately returned Monday.

Media Matters for America, a liberal watchdog group, has written a letter to Sinclair asking the company to cancel reported plans to air the film between now and the Nov. 2 election, the group said in a statement.

"Sinclair's plan to air anti-Kerry propaganda before the election is an abuse of the public airwaves for what appears to be partisan political purposes," Media Matters CEO David Brock said in the letter.

The letter warned Sinclair that its plan could constitute a violation of broadcast regulations requiring equal time for political candidates, as well as the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law, the group said.

Sinclair's top executives include members of the controlling Smith family, who have been strong financial supporters of President Bush's campaign, the Post said in its report.

Sinclair executives have given nearly $68,000 in political contributions, 97 percent of it going to Republicans, since the beginning of the year, according to the Los Angeles Times.

According to the report, "Stolen Honor" focuses on Kerry's antiwar testimony to Congress in 1971 and its effect on American POWs in Vietnam, and was produced independently of Sinclair.

The anti-Kerry film states that the senator's testimony hurt the American war effort and undercut morale among the troops.

Excellent, I can't wait to see the other side of the coin. In all honesty, I think Michael Moore's movie was a piece of crap and I am sure this will be too. Two different sides pushing an agenda. Both will have truths and lies.

I can imagine what will happen is that Moore and his lackeys will try to also get a pre-election, no-commercial showing of F-9/11 in response to this. What stuns me is that there are people out there that could actually be swayed by a movie (either the yet-to-be-seen one or F-9/11).

Don't you just LOVE election season??? At least there are less than four more weeks of this crap to go.

Yes, contrary to public interest.

Did anyone notice that when f-911 started showing all over the country, it was "ok". Now the swift boat people and the TV show that plans on airing before the election, has everyone hollering UNFAIR. Go figure. The problem is everyone believed f-911 to be FACT. That stupidity cost President Bush a lot of votes. I strongly believe the Bush camp BETTER fight back hard or they will lose like his Father did. President Bush needs to do whatever it takes to win or we all, will be in a barrel of shit.

David- I haven't heard much reaction about this just yet as I only heard about it a couple hours ago. But no one in this thread has said it was "unfair". It does seem a bit odd that this company wouldn't allow it ABC affiliates to list the names of the fallen soldiers in Iraq, but says they have to show this movie, without commercials no less. Doesn't really fall in line with the "liberal media" myth.

Personally, I really don't care that they're showing this. And like I said, if it does get shown, I think it's a foregone conclusion that F-9/11 will also be shown on network TV before the election. Propaganda for everyone's enjoyment!!!!!!!!!

Everyone accuses the candidates of lying, I think these things are worse because there is no accountability. Just causes more division and problems, the last thing our country needs.

Also notice how up in arms P. Diddy & Sean Penn are up in arms over that movie "Team America." I guess dissent is alright as long as it doesn't involve oneself. Personally I think UN-R has it right...

Yep Moore wants to make sure his dvd is out before election-you have CBS runningfake documents on 60 minutes to burn Bush AND TODAY ABC jumps on bandwagon with their political news director sending memo to his staff to make sure they report any conservative mistakes but let the liberals slide.
--and they wonder why more people view Fox than others combined ;)

An internal memo written by ABCNEWS Political Director Mark Halperin admonishes ABC staff: During coverage of Democrat Kerry and Republican Bush not to "reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable."

The controversial internal memo obtained by DRUDGE, captures Halperin stating how "Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win."

But Halperin claims that Bush is hoping to "win the election by destroying Senator Kerry at least partly through distortions."

"The current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done," Halperin writes.

Halperin's claim that ABCNEWS will not "reflexively and artificially hold both sides 'equally' accountable" set off sparks in St. Louis where media players gathered to cover the second presidential debate.

So Sinclair Broadcasting Group, a broadcasting company that owns 62 television stations, has decided to broadcast a television movie before the election called "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal." (A 42-minute movie about sKerry's anti-war activities when he came back from Vietnam) It will be shown on all of their stations, many of which are in battleground states.

As expected, the Democrats are up in arms over this. They're outraged that a company would choose the programming it wants to run on its own stations. (At least 18 senators have come out against it) The film includes interviews with Vietnam War POWs, their wives, and others that were affected by Kerry's testimony about atrocities. The company has invited John Kerry to be a guest on the program, but that's not enough for the DNC.

What say the Democrats? Since they don't like the content of the broadcast, they are trying to get it banned from the airwaves. We call that "censorship." The Democratic National Committee is going to file a complaint with the Federal Election Commission today, complaining that the broadcast amounts to an illegal contribution to President Bush's campaign. To state it in the plainest possible terms, the Democrats are asking the Imperial Federal Government to use its monopoly on the use of force to prevent a private corporation from airing programming Democrats don't like. Censorship is the only word that really applies.

The left is interested in freedom of speech...until they don't agree with it. At that point, they want to use the power of the Imperial Federal Government to crush any dissenting views.

What are they going to do try to defame a man for speaking up against a useless war. I thank God that there were people with the courage and conviction of John Kerry, and others,to speak up against that dreadful war. We will never know how many lives were saved because this is America and we are allowed to take to the streets and speak up against what we feel is wrong. Sinclair would like that we only hear their warped view of things. People have the power!

I hope they will try and "define" the man myself---and do you seriously think his speaking out was anything other than political ambition--if so explain why he took movie reinactments of of Viet Nam.

We come away with different thoughts on him Stevie---I look at the POW's who were tortured by the North to say exact same thing but held on for years of captivity and torture instead---
but I quess that makes about as much sense as someone who called our troops Gengis Khan--baby killers ect and now expects people to support him in bid for commander and chief.

My strong suggestion to him would be if he is elected to stay away miltary in combat zones--accidents happen.

and if "speaking out equals" courage and conviction I would have to assume you consider all the liberal protestors as model citizens???

Wish someone would post picture of our soilders raising flag on Iwajima and then put picture of Kerry's thugs flying upside flag on cover of his book The New Soldier next to it and do survey of which ones define courage!!!!!!!!!!!!

Military Rejects Kerry by Staggering Margin

By a staggering margin of 4 to 1, U.S. military personnel have rejected the presidential candidacy of Sen. John Kerry, a new survey by Army Times magazine shows.

With 4,000 full-time and part-time troops responding, a full 73 percent said they would vote for President Bush if the election were held today, reports USA Today, a sister publication of Army Times.

BJ:

Surprised that Americans could be swayed by a movie? I suggest you go out an take a good hard look at the electorate.

This is a sound bite society. Both sides us it as the vast majority of the electorate has the retention capacity of Jessica Simpson.

I think both movies could have an effect on the majority of the electorate. It's too bad that thinking individuals like me, you, DJV, Stevie, and Matt who look beyond the sound bite cannot elect the president.

Instead we have guys like Wayne, Freeze, Saint, IO, Turf, the little yellow devil. David and PirateFan falling into the class of soundbite, superficial voters who will probably re-elect this criminal administration.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I beg to differ Edward as I am speaking from actual combat experience in Viet Nam as are many of the 73% of Army personell above---and your crew???????????

If you remember correctly my assesment of Kerry's military on this sight almost a year ago was almost mirrored the SwiftBoats before they even appeared. Chance ---I think not
Those that were not there believe what they want to believe--those that were there can easily spot the fabrications.

Oh I see Wayne, so Farenheit 911 is made up propoganda but the swift boat movie is a documentary. Sounds about what I would expect from the right.

And as far as your actual combat experience in Viet Nam being used as support for your position, I can tell you this that during the 60's I had actual sit in and demonstration experience with ROTC students at the University of Cincinnati. I further had a similar experience to George W. Bush in the 60's as I too sat at many bars, albeit not in Alabama and/or Texas, drinking Budweiser.

Although this anticipated fantasy movie does not reflect the views and recollections of those that actually SERVED with Kerry, you will recall that there viewpoints almost mirrored my assesment of Kerrys military record which I posted nearly one year ago.

Once again Wayne, we have a stand off. Do you believe the men that actually served with Kerry or do you believe the men that served AROUND Kerry who did not like what he did and said after the war?

Don't try to make this movie gospel as it, like F-911, was produced with an agenda in mind.

WHY---

Book Reviewers Tout Kelley Screed, Ignore 'Unfit for Command'

The book that turned the 2004 presidential race on its head - "Unfit for Command," by John O'Neill and Jerome Corsi - has yet to be formally reviewed by the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and most other mainstream U.S. newspapers, despite sitting atop the New York Times best-seller list now for four weeks in a row.

and while Kerry and other liberals would like you to believe this and other books such as Uncommon Valor that expose these frauds the author of another book exposing Kerry also ,Uncommon Valor, author Burkett, is doing this solely for election purposes let me set the record straight. He has been exposing military frauds for 20 years.
a little about him--short and great read
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1230164/posts

"Burkett's exhaustive research thoroughly debunked the myth represented by Kerry's ragtag band of angry, disaffected protesters. When compared with their non-veteran peers, Vietnam veterans do not have higher incidences of drug abuse, unemployment, suicide, divorce, or homelessness. "In every category for which I could find statistics," writes Burkett, "Vietnam veterans were as successful or more successful than men their age who did not go to Vietnam." Vietnam veterans on average have higher incomes than non-veterans and are more likely to have a college education and own a home. In contrast to John Kerry's portrayal of disillusioned victims, a Washington Post survey taken in 1985 ? the tenth anniversary of the fall of Saigon ? found that 91 percent of those who served in Vietnam were "glad they served their country."

Burkett thought he was signing on for a short project, but he ended up exposing more than 1,200 bogus Vietnam War records, including those of prominent activists, celebrated war heroes, criminals, politicians, and even a well-known actor. For years, Brian Dennehy publicly maintained he was a Vietnam combat veteran, telling a New York Times reporter in 1989 about his combat wounds, and holding forth about the brutal realities of combat in a 1993 Playboy interview. Burkett's examination of Dennehy's military records showed that during his four years on active duty his only overseas assignment was in Okinawa in 1962, and there was no record of his having ever been wounded.

Last year, Burkett was awarded the Army's highest decoration for civilians, the Distinguished Civilian Service Award. The decoration represents the debt owed Burkett by the 2.7 million veterans who served in Vietnam whose honorable records and reputations he has tirelessly defended. At the award ceremony, an undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs explained that in addition to restoring their good name to Vietnam veterans, Burkett "exposed a mass distortion of history that cost taxpayers billions of dollars" in undeserved veterans benefits. The government pays up to $3,000 a month to Vietnam veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and bogus documents have qualified an unknown number of phony veterans for these benefits. Burkett explains that he recently helped conduct a VA study of 100 such alleged PTSD victims chosen at random. They found that "only 39 percent were in remotely close contact with combat, and some were never in the military." Over a lifetime, phonies can collect a million dollars each in VA benefits.

One of Burkett's most shocking accounts of the media bias responsible for the distorted image of Vietnam veterans involves a 1988 CBS documentary, The Wall Within, hosted by Dan Rather. The hour-long special featured horrific accounts of murder and mayhem witnessed by six purported Vietnam veterans with post-war histories of drug abuse, alcoholism, homelessness, and despair. The atrocities and ruined lives were apparently "too good to check": By consulting records that CBS failed to research, Burkett found that only one of the veterans had actually served in combat. Burkett contacted CBS with his documentation and the Veterans Administration shared its data refuting CBS's assertions about the high incidence of homelessness and mental illness among Vietnam veterans. The producers defiantly stood by their bogus story and the president of CBS defended the broadcast. After recounting the sorry episode of journalistic malpractice, Burkett wrote: "Why won't Rather and CBS admit their 'documentary' was a fraud, that it perpetuated an unwarranted, false picture of men who fought in Vietnam?"

Sixteen years ago, the indefatigable B. G. Burkett was fighting a lonely battle to hold the media accountable. With reinforcements in the blogosphere and new media, CBS finally has to say, "We're sorry."
