Brown had coached college ball twice before, and twice the N.C.A.A. sanctions ax had fallen on his teams, at U.C.L.A. and Kansas. Those penalties were ridiculous, he told me. Check it out.

I did, and he was wrong. At Kansas, there was a taped phone call in which Brown admitted to illegal payments and assistants who acted as bag men. At U.C.L.A., he coached his team to the title game, only to have the N.C.A.A. toss out the tournament run because Brown had played two players who were academically ineligible.

S.M.U. knew of Brown?s college track record when it hired him. The search for a nationally ranked basketball team requires sacrifices.

This Happens All The Time Still

This Happens All The Time Still

It's always the players that get the raw end both here and present day. Two players transfer in to this
un-named school and are offered Scholarships. Their last chance to play in the Big Dance. BOOM! Their new school and Coach are caught doing something against the rules and immediately new school suspends team (the players) from playing in the post tournament.

Coach is the one breaking the rules and Bamb! the players are punished. Life dreams are destroyed.

No big deal I guess...TEN YEARS LATER...same player and coach, both now retired from the game, meet on the street. Coach brags about his new college team that he is coaching and his new suit. Coach says...what have you been doing?...not much, he replies. After we finished that last season of mine at the University and after you completely destroyed everything that I had worked for my entire life, so what have I been doing? ...nothing...absolutely nothing...finished college with no degree and no skills and no money and did not go to the Dance!...and could not find work and I am now homeless and hungry. I don't remember, Hey Coach P. how are You these days?

Fact or Fiction?

Hudson Valley area.....NY
Old School...thank's for sharing that..great article...amazing how this still goes on....even when I was coaching and had some blue chip stars.... AAU was starting to get real popular...I had one of the top players in NY State. Recruited by over 150 schools...he needed to go to summer school to be on target to graduate the following June...but Ernie Lorch who ran back then Riverside Church{ AAU Powerhouse} wanted to him travel all summer in AAU tourneys in Arizona,Texas,California,etc...my kid was an NYC kid and he wanted to travel and not attend....the only reason he stayed in summer school was because his mother trusted me...he did get his HS diploma, didn't "predict" his SAT's so went to a Kansas juco...got his associated degree and transferred to a MAAC school...scored 21 points at the Meadowlands vs Seton Hall in his 1st D-1 game...never got his BA or BS at this school...and like so many of my kids the story doesn't end well....6 years later he was arrested in a drug deal and is now serving time in a state prison...his mother died of cancer the year before he was arrested.. I always believed that if his mother hadn't died she might have been able to save him..maybe not...thank's again for that article..great read

No argument from me. Dickie V is a legend to me. And so is Joe Mullaney, Gavit, etc., etc., etc......and on.

I counted fairly recently and found out I have played basketball here in North America and abroad for 40 years in front of more than 100 coaches from Jr High (Middle School These Days) High School with Coach Stebs to my last pro coach in Europe. I appreciate what coaches do. I know because I was a coach for awhile. Can not imagine what it would be like on an NCAAB, WBNA or NBA level. To much stress for me. Playing was stressful enough for me. When I coached I really only enjoyed the youth level coaching. I love coaching at the youth level.
