Theodore's new deal reportedly worth $12 million

MONTREAL -- Jose Theodore, the NHL MVP and Vezina Trophy winner last season, was re-signed by the Montreal Canadiens to a three-year contract Thursday.

Financial terms of the deal, confirmed to The Canadian Press by an unidentified team spokesman, were not released. But TSN.ca reported on its Web site that the deal is worth $16 million.

Theodore, a restricted free agent, was asking for about $6 million a season, while the Canadiens were offering about $4 million.

A news conference to announce the deal was scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Theodore, who turns 26 next week, won the Hart Trophy as the league MVP and the Vezina Trophy as top goalie last season after leading the Canadiens to the playoffs for the first time in four years.

The Montreal native had a career-best seven-game winning streak during the playoff drive in late March and early April.

Theodore led the NHL with a .931 save percentage and had a 2.11 goals-against average. He became the Canadiens' No. 1 goalie after veteran Jeff Hackett was injured early in the season.

He also had career highs in games played (67), wins (30), shutouts (7) and was selected to the North American All-Star team.

Theodore was largely responsible for Montreal's upset of Boston in the first round of the playoffs. The Canadiens were eliminated in six games in the second round by the Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes.
