Exactly. Prior to 1955 the South was Democrat, the North, Republican.

The came Brown V. Board. Civil Rights was born. The white Southern Democrats heads popped from the steam pressure, and they ran to the Republican party, which welcomed them with open arms. Suddenly the Republican party became the party of bigotry, and thinking Republicans became Democrats.

LBJ said when he signed the Voting Rights Act that he'd thrown away the Democrat party, and he was correct.
