He was not everyone's cup of tea so to speak, but he was a genius and incredibly talented. He was one of David Letterman's favorites and you can hear him talk about requesting Zevon to play "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" during what everyone knew would be Zevon's last appearance on the show.
Rumor has it after the show Zevon told Letterman he was honored to perform it for him since it would likely be the last time he would be able to. Letterman, as I am sure anyone would, was reassuring that that would not be the case.
Zevon never played live again.
