What are people's thought about betting just the first half on spreads of 28 or more. It seems to me that most teams (with large spreads) like to run their normal offense the first half and then slow it down and play the reserves in the second half. With spreads this large there is a definite level of play difference between the 2 teams. It seems the winning coaches in the second half coaches pull their starters, but the smaller schools tend to leave them in, trying to get a little morale boost for their starters.

Does anyone have statistics, or know how I can get them, of first half scores when a team is favored by more than 28 (note: I just chose 28 as an arbitrary number)

I'm not sure what the numbers are, but my guess is this is no longer a valid angle given the emphasis on winning big in the BCS era, and the fact that the non-BCS conferences are much stronger than they used to be. My guess is that for every back-door cover you get because the coach pulls his starters, you'll have a big fav cover despite a poor 1st half (OSU-Cinci last weekend comes to mind).

good question

good question

I don't know the numbers either, but I like the angle for betting the highly favored team in the first half and maybe the first quarter aswell. I think this is the type of play you were refering to with this angle. I have used this angle successfully this season betting on Michigan. It failed with Ohio State this past week. I would also like to see some feedback on this angle if anyone has any numbers.

I don't like doing that on certain teams...I guess you gotta know who to play this certain type of bet on...

here are a couple teams that you may want to think about when playing that type of bet...

USC rolls toward the end of the game but starts out slow...

However, Texas loves to come out and squash teams from the get go, and never let up due to RPI...

In my opinion if a team has a terrible RPI but is very good than sometimes this is a decent bet ie. Texas...

My opinion is Texas is a good team to take for this type of bet, and USC is not.. that's all the help I can give...

I like taking Halftime over/under bets depending on how many points are being scored in the 1st personally
