Tonight at the Staples Center, I'm going to lay the points and watch the defending world champion Spurs once again take care of the Lakers.
Back on March 6, San Antonio scored a seven-point win and cover at L.A. to up their run over L.A. to 6-0 SU and and 4-2 ATS. However, four days later, the Lakers marched into Texas and outscored the Spurs 56-26 in the lane to score a 100-92 outright win. Tim Duncan, Nazr Mohammed and the Spurs won't allow that kind of domination this time around.
The Spurs (3-0 ATS run at L.A.) need this game to maintain their slim lead (1 1/2 games) over Dallas for the best record in the Western Conference. After Tuesday's solid win and cover over the Clippers (on this same court), San Antonio is on highway runs of 6-3 SU and 5-3 ATS. They've covered seven of their last nine on one days rest, as they spent a relaxing Wednesday (including some playtime on a soccer field) in La-La Land.
Oh, and the Spurs have a guy named Bruce Bowen, too. Laker coach Phil Jackson calls him "Edward Scissorhands'' because the defensive-minded Bowen is all over the guys he guards. And tonight, that will be Kobe Bryant, who has been slowed by back spasms this week.
Kobe will feel a pain in the neck ,too, trying to score against Bowen. In three games versus Bowen and the Spurs this year, Kobe has shot just 39.4 percent from the floor. L.A. has other health issues, too, as Chris Mihm (10.4 ppg) is still out while Smush Parker (thumb) and the suddenly productive Kwame Brown (hamstring) are hobbling, as well.
Yes, San Antonio has a some banged up bodies, too. But after sitting out the win over the Clippers, point guard Tony Parker has proclaimed he and his sore leg ready to go this eveing. And former Laker Nick Van Exel has returned, too.
Flat out, San Antonio is the better team and they tend to play their best against elite competition on the road. That was the case when they won by 24 at Phoenix on March 9. Guys like Manu Ginobili thrive in these situations.
L.A. just beat four straight inferior opponents to post its longest winning streak of the season. But San Antonio, which plays better defense and takes care of the ball better than L.A., is in a class above the Lakers and the Spurs will emerge with this win and cover tonight.
