Game notes.......................................
The schedule makers have been waiting all season for this Western Athletic Conference showdown, and now the 20th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs have the opportunity to show why they should be the most feared program in the league as they host the Boise State Broncos in a special Thursday night affair in California. Both schools began the 2005 campaign among the nation's best, but then fell off track and were knocked out of the rankings, with FSU managing to break back in thanks to a six-game win streak. Last Saturday night the Bulldogs moved to a perfect 5-0 in league play with a 45-7 thrashing of the visiting San Jose State Spartans, leaving their 37-34 setback to Oregon on the road during the middle of September as their only defeat. As for the Broncos, owners of the nation's longest home winning streak (30) as well as the longest conference winning streak (31), they opened this season with back- to-back losses against Georgia and Oregon State on the road, before crushing Bowling Green for their first victory. Since that triumph BSU has put together a string of wins that now has it at seven straight, thanks to a 56-6 drubbing of visiting New Mexico State in league play last weekend. Over the last three outings the Broncos have outscored opponents by a combined 150-41. As far as the all-time series between these two schools is concerned, Boise State is ahead of the Bulldogs by a count of 4-3. Last year the Broncos posted a 33-16 win at home over the Bulldogs. With both programs a perfect 5-0 in conference, the winner of this game will be in control of their destiny with regard to the postseason.
Boise State let it's running game do all the talking against the Aggies last Saturday, piling up 303 yards on 58 carries and landing in the end zone a total of six times. Lee Marks posted one of those scores along with a team- high 112 yards, while Antwaun Carter added 60 yards and two TDs as well. Jared Zabransky ended up being just one of three quarterbacks to throw a pass, finishing 13-of-23 for 138 yards and a score in the onslaught. BSU is easily the top rushing team in the conference, putting up 219 ypg and having scored a total of 26 touchdowns thus far. However, that doesn't mean that Zabransky is not pulling his share of the weight, having converted 63 percent of his passes for 15 touchdowns and 207 ypg. Unfortunately, the signal-caller has shown moments when he's not been at his best, already having thrown 10 interceptions. With 22 receptions Legedu Naanee is third on the team in catches, but he's first with six touchdowns and 352 yards.
With the BSU rushing attack being so potent, the Aggies were lucky to get a chance to take control of the ball themselves, but even when they did they couldn't do much with it. On their two punt returns the Aggies produced a total of minus-one yard, setting the stage for an offense that was held to just 61 yards rushing and 176 yards of offense overall. Korey Hall led the Broncos with seven tackles, while Cam Hall made both of his stops behind the line of scrimmage and had one of the team's four sacks on the evening. Since many opponents find themselves playing catch-up against the Broncos, it's not all that unusual to see the run defense having the numbers it does right now. The group has surrendered just 104.7 ypg and a total of six touchdowns. The same can be said for the pass defense which is being picked on time and time again as those same opponents try to get back into contention. After nine games BSU is allowing 255.9 ypg and has given up 22 touchdowns, and still the squad finds ways to win.
Needing just two plays to travel 47 yards into the end zone to start the second half, the Bulldogs had San Jose State staring down a 31-0 deficit before the Spartans even knew what hit them. A big part of that scoring outburst was due to QB Paul Pinegar, the WAC's Offensive Player of the Week, who connected on 22-of-35 passes for 368 yards and three touchdowns through the air and another score on the ground. Paul Williams caught a team-high six balls for 137 yards and a TD. Not to be overlooked, Wendell Mathis kept the rushing game moving in the right direction with 105 yards and a score on 21 carries. Except for their 27-point effort against Hawaii, the Bulldogs have scored no less than 34 points in any game this season, which is why they are ranked first in the conference and fifth nationally with 41.9 ppg. The squad has come out in the first half on fire, scoring a combined 183 points through the opening two quarters, compared to just 71 points for opponents. Mathis, who is averaging six yards per carry, has landed in the end zone 12 times on the ground, while Pinegar's .650 completion percentage has provided for 16 TDs and just four picks.
While Fresno State was racking up 531 yards of total offense, the Spartans were having a hard time figuring out who they should put under center just to stay competitive. In the final analysis it took three signal-callers to combine for 5-of-23 passing for 48 yards, making the job of the FSU defense that much easier. The Bulldogs did surrender a hefty 211 yards on 31 rushing attempts, but considering SJSU scored just once on the ground, it was a trade- off FSU was willing to make. While the offense is running on all cylinders for the Bulldogs, one cannot forget how well Pat Hill's defense has performed, giving up just 15.8 ppg to rank first in the WAC and 10th nationally. The run defense has surrendered just 117.6 ypg and a mere six TDs, while the pass defense has permitted 189.4 ypg and 10 scores through eight games. Perhaps most impressive about these numbers is the fact that the unit has not had preseason WAC Defensive Player of the Year Garrett McIntyre to lean on every game. Out with an injury early on, McIntyre has just 13 tackles this season, yet is still among the team leaders with six TFLs and four sacks.
