Sox to start Lance Broadway, keep D.J. Carrasco in bullpen
While it is not being called an audition, Lance Broadway will start Thursday's game against Kansas City, with D.J. Carrasco staying in his valuable bullpen role.
Broadway, the club's first-round draft pick in 2005, won his first major-league start Sept. 27 with six shutout innings against the Royals, albeit under different circumstances. This time he hopes to join the rotation for the final six weeks.
"I have to let him know this is not a game to see him pitch, this is a game to win," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We need the best outing from him because it's about winning now. It's not the same situation when he was pitching last year."
Guillen originally had named Carrasco a starter, but he has become a valuable late-inning man with Scott Linebrink on the disabled list.
"If Carrasco starts, then we lose him for four or five days," Guillen said. "I think it's important that the seventh and eighth innings, before we get to Bobby [Jenks], to have those guys ready."
