Blackhawks Can Clinch A Playoff Spot With Win Vs. Blues On Thursday

We?re winding down in the NHL?s regular season, and several teams have already clinched playoff berths, though there are a few that are going to come down to the wire.

In the Western Conference, four teams have clinched playoff spots, with the 1, 2, 4, and 5 seeds having been essentially decided. The Pacific Division is still very up for grabs, but there?s an opportunity for another team to clinch a berth on Thursday.

When they hit the ice against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night, the Chicago Blackhawks will be going for more than just the two points. They?ll be going for two points that would put them in the playoffs.

The Hawks will meet the Blues for the fourth time since the end of February, going 2-1-0 against them over that span, with one of the wins coming in the shootout. St. Louis is making a run for the Presidents Trophy, and the Hawks can join them by locking down a spot in the postseason.

The reason they?ll be able to do so is because of the situation with the Pacific Divison. The division?s top four teams are fighting for three spots, one of which will be the no. 3 seed for the division winner. That just leaves two spots for the other three.

Between the Dallas Stars, LA Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Phoenix Coyotes, they all play each other enough before the season ends that not all of them would be able to jump the Hawks. The Hawks also have a ROW of 37, which is well above any of them.

Given all of the injuries and inconsistency that the Hawks have dealt with in the second half of the season, it?s impressive that they could lock down a spot in the playoffs, and avoid the drama of last season. Of course, doing it against the Blues will be easier said than done.

Larsson might have to wait for his next chance; DeBoer to make decision on Volchenkov in morning

Devils coach Pete DeBoer said he hasn?t decided yet whether he will put Adam Larsson back in the lineup for Thursday?s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but it sounded like the rookie defenseman might have to wait a bit longer to get another chance to play.

Larsson was a healthy scratch for the first time this season on Tuesday night and watched the Devils pull out a 2-1 shootout victory over Chicago Blackhawks.

?I think we?re all comfortable that we can stick him back in the lineup and we?re going to get a positive response,? DeBoer said. ?Right now, he?s just got to wait for his opportunity. That might be next game. It might be a week from now. The bigger picture here is you?re at a time of the year right now where the individual attention and the individual teaching really takes a back seat to where the team?s at and getting the team in the right place for the playoffs.?

Larsson said he has ?no idea? if he will play against the Lightning.

?I?m preparing myself for it and then we?ll see,? he said. ?Otherwise, I?m prepared for the (conditioning) skate, so that?s good.?

Larsson said the conditioning skate is the worst part of not playing. He didn?t particularly like watching a game when he?s healthy either.

?I think it can be good for me to get a short break there,? Larsson said. ?You want to always be out there, so you are a little (upset). I hope I can get back out there as soon as possible. It?s pretty tough just watching know that you?re out of the lineup.?

***
As I reported earlier, defenseman Anton Volchenkov skated on his own this morning after missing the last two games with a lower-body injury. It appears possible he could play Thursday.

?We?ll see how he is in the morning and make a decision in the morning,? DeBoer said.

DeBoer said there is ?no change? in the status of defenseman Henrik Tallinder, who hasn?t played since Jan. 17 because of a blood clot in his lower left leg.

Tallinder has been skating and working out off the ice, but is limited on how much he can do until he gets the go-ahead from the doctor. He has been on blood-thinning medication for the blood clot.

***

Defenseman Marek Zidlicky played a game-high 29:15 in Tuesday?s game. Before that, the most he had played as a Devil was 25:17 in the 4-3 shootout loss to Toronto last Friday.

?I think it was just the way things fell,? DeBoer said. ?We had a couple young D in the lineup, which put more of an onus on the veteran guys and being a 1-0, 1-1 game and then the overtime and trying to create another goal in another goal in order to get a win, I think he?s a guy you naturally look too.?

Do Devils appear to be fatigued?

The Devils beat the Blackhawks 2-1 Tuesday night in yet another shootout win -- their league-leading 12th of the season. But despite inching closer to clinching a playoff berth, there seems to be some concern among Devils fans on NJ.com

Several NJ.com users have commented on the Devils looking tired or burnt out. Says NJ.com user joeydevil:

The reason could be too many guys logged too much ice time during the season. This team isn't young, and the defense looks awful!!

But as devszid says:

They don't get any extra points for style or substance, so 2 points is 2 points.

Still, a tired team heading into the grueling playoffs is not the way to go on a long postseason run.

--I don't think the issue is fatigue as much as the lack of solid defensemen. The forwards are asked to help out the defense thereby taking away from the offensive end. Mindless blame is directed at Brodeur for the team's failures but the real issue is the defense. Currently, Volchenkov, the anchor of the defense, is hurt. Those that blame the time on ice by the players are inaccurate. Have any of you researched the average TOI of players on other teams? As much as I hate to admit, the Devils sorely miss Tallinder and his veteran leadership. The Devils defense with Tallinder, Volchenkov, Salvadore, and Greene are the leaders from that end. The Devils need to get healthier and develop more confidence.

GAMEDAY: Wild vs. Panthers

Jason Zucker will go from highly touted prospect to NHL player, as he is set to debut with the Wild against the Florida Panthers tonight at Xcel Energy Center. The 20-year-old signed a three-year, entry-level contract on Tuesday. He comes to Minnesota after his sophomore year at the University of Denver, where he was one of the most productive college players in the nation during the last two seasons. In 78 games with the Pioneers, Zucker produced 91 points on 45 goals and 46 assists.

Adding a new face to the lineup, the Wild also returns two familiar ones. Niklas Backstrom will get his first start in nearly a month. Backstrom has dealt with a lower body issue after suffering a groin injury on March 1 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Justin Falk returns to the blue line after missing nine games with a lower body injury. Falk suffered the injury against the Colorado Avalanche on March 4.

With the arrival of Zucker, the Wild reassigned Chad Rau to Houston yesterday. The Wild?s injury woes continue as Matt Kassian has been shut down for the season with a sports hernia and will likely undergo surgery.

On Tuesday, the Wild was topped by the New York Rangers, 3-2. Minnesota was paced by its special teams play, with both Kyle Brodziak and Dany Heatley scoring on the man advantage. Josh Harding made 29 saves in the loss.

The Panthers beat the Canadiens in a shootout, 3-2 on Tuesday. Wojtek Wolski scored in regulation and had the only goal of the shootout. Mikael Samuelsson also scored for the Panthers. Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves for the win.

Tampa Bay Lightning sticking with Dwayne Roloson in net until eliminated from playoffs

It may not be until next week that we see Sebastien Caron in net for the Tampa Bay Lightning as the team will stay with Dwayne Roloson in net until it is officially eliminated from the playoffs.

"Well ... yeah," coach Guy Boucher said when asked if that was going to be the case.

The Lightning can be eliminated as soon as Saturday. With six games left, the best Tampa Bay can do is 89 points. The Sabres, who own the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference have 86 points, so any combination of four points gained by the Sabres an/or lost by the Lightning signals the official end of the dream for Tampa Bay.

"It's more than that, though," Boucher said about sticking with Roloson, who is 3-1-0 in his past four starts with a 2.94 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. "He's played well and given us a chance to win every game. In the meantime, Caron is practicing with NHLers. He's getting his NHL timing back, so when he's in nets, he'd be more prepared."

Caron, signed on March 19 because of the injury to Mathieu Garon, was supposed to start Tuesday against the Bruins but ended up as backup because of Roloson's hot streak. He said he is cool with whatever decisions Boucher makes about his playing time.

"I'm here to support everybody and whenever they tell me to play, I'm playing," Caron said. "My job is to be prepared and see what's going to happen."

Other stuff from the morning skate: The agent for newly signed forward J.T. Brown said his client obtained his passport and is flying to Tampa to join the team Friday. Expect him to play Saturday at the Tampa Bay Times Forum against the Jets. Obtaining the passport so Brown could travel with the team next week to Canada was the only issue that could have delayed his Lightning debut. ... As expected, captain Vinny Lecavalier will play after missing 18 games with a fractured right hand. Just as interesting, though, is that Lecavalier admitted for the first time his surgically repaired right shoulder, which was dislocated and sustained a torn labrum in April 2008, has only this season finally been back to normal. And that is because the nine brackets that were inserted to hold the shoulder in place were so tight, the shoulder lost flexibility that only this season has really returned. "Oh, my God, they just put it in there really tight," Lecavalier said. "They wanted to make sure it didn't come out again. For two years it felt like it was coming forward. (As a demonstration, Lecavalier rolled his shoulder forward). Even during the night I could feel it pushing forward. I worked on it all summer, and if I didn't work on it for two weeks it felt like it was moving forward and felt like it was stuck. Not that it was hurting, but it felt a little restricted. This is the first year the shoulder feels pretty good." ... Center Nate Thompson will miss his seventh game with an upper body injury, but sounded as if he will play Saturday at home against the Jets. ... The question, again, came up for both Lecavalier and Thompson about playing this season; that is, is it worth it? Both said it is. "I'm ready to play and it happened that there are six games left," Lecavalier said. "It could have been one game, three games. When you're ready to come back, you come back. These guys have been working so hard the last month or so, and I wanted to come and play and have some fun and play the game and finish the season strong." Added Thompson: "If you're healthy, there's no point not playing. We're all competitive guys. We want to finish the season playing." ... Here's a couple good stats provided by Stats Inc.: Steven Stamkos has four months this season in which he scored at least 10 goals. Since 1992-93, only Teemu Selanne and Alexander Mogilny have more in one season with five. ... In his past 248 starts, Devils goaltender Marty Brodeur has allowed two hat tricks to Joffrey Lupul and Marty St. Louis. ... Finally, Brodeur's 35 wins over the Lightning are 10 more than any other goalie (25 by Olaf Kolzig).

Sharks Gameday: Here Comes The Stretch Drive; Tiebreakers Likely To Determine Who Makes The Playoffs In the Western Conference

Take a look at this gong show going in the Pacific Division right now:

Pacific Division Standings
team GP W L OTL PTS ROW Goal Dif.
Dallas Stars 77 42 30 5 89 35 +1
Los Angeles Kings 77 38 27 12 88 32 +13
San Jose Sharks 77 39 28 10 88 31 +12
Phoenix Coyotes 77 37 27 13 87 31 -2

Barring an absolute collapse from two of these teams, the Pacific Division will send three teams to the playoffs this season by the skin of their teeth. Colorado and Calgary are still mathematically alive, but it looks unlikely either of them will be able to get it done based off points earned and games played.

San Jose will play Phoenix once, Dallas twice, and Los Angeles twice in their remaining five games. Their playoff fate is firmly in their own hands right now.

Here is the tiebreaking scenario that will likely come into play (or at the very least be heavily discussed) during the next week and a half:

1) The greater number of points earned (herp derp).

2) The greater number of games won, excluding games won in the Shootout. This figure is reflected in the ROW column.

3) The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4) The greater differential between goals for and against for the entire regular season. This figure is reflected in the Goal Differential column.

Points earned are obviously the ultimate right now. Having said that, here is how San Jose stands in relation to all of the relevant tiebreakers:

Dallas is light years ahead in the ROW column and are two points up on 9th seeded Phoenix. They have the inside track on both the Pacific Division title and the subsequent three seed. The rest of ROW is messy (and is going to stay that way until the end of the season. Tonight's game against the Coyotes has a lot of implications, with one of them being how ROW will play out.
As we've said before, ROW looks like it might determine who makes and misses this season.
Phoenix will finish with the head to head tiebreaker over San Jose regardless of what happens tonight. The Sharks have earned 4 points; the Coyotes have earned 7.
San Jose will finish with the head to head tiebreaker over Dallas regardless of what happens in their two remaining games. The Sharks have earned 7 points; the Stars have earned 2. Having said that, with Dallas leading in ROW by such a wide margin, it's highly unlikely this makes a difference at the end of the year.
Los Angeles currently leads the head to head tiebreaker over San Jose with two games remaining. The Sharks have earned 4 points; the Kings have earned 5.
The Sharks are in pretty good position in the goal differential tiebreaker with a +12, but with the other tiebreakers taking precedence, this only has the potential to apply to one team-- the Los Angeles Kings.

Don't want to get ahead of ourselves here, but that two game set against Los Angeles has the potential to have all four tiebreakers in play. If both teams are fighting for the final spot that weekend, it might be the most pivotal regular season finish in NHL history considering all of the points and tiebreakers that would be in play.

'No question' Capitals go with Tomas Vokoun at Bruins

As if there was any doubt that Tomas Vokoun was the man in goal for the Washington Capitals, when healthy, Dale Hunter erased it Thursday.

Not only did the coach give Vokoun the nod against the Boston Bruins, he made it sound like he didn't even give any thought to starting Michal Neuvirth or Braden Holtby.

?He's a veteran and he's been through these things before. So it's no question,? Hunter said. ?Most of the games he's been solid for us, given us a chance to win every night.?

?No question? now that Vokoun is back from a groin injury that has bothered him for at least the past three weeks. The 35-year-old has appeared in just 3 of the past 17 games but is good to go now.

Vokoun, who in December referred to himself as a ?paid employee? when he didn't start his South Florida homecoming, said he never expects anything.

?I told them I'm healthwise ready to go,? Vokoun said. ?They made their decision. It's pretty much where it is.?

Vokoun has quietly won 25 of the Caps' 38 games this season, putting up a goals-against average of 2.53 and save percentage of .916. Those numbers are better than Neuvirth's and Holtby's, though the 22-year-old recent call-up doesn't have a deep body of work this season.

Vokoun was stellar when the Caps beat the Bruins at TD Garden on March 10, stopping 30 of the 33 shots he faced. He knows the kind of traffic patterns Boston can run in front of him, and how not to be bothered by them.

?It's a tough game against them. They're a good team and they make it hard on you,? Vokoun said. ?It's not going to be easy. We've got to be ready to play, everybody, and it's a huge game for us.?

And the perfect game for Vokoun, who noted Wednesday he has nothing to save in the tank. This is for the playoffs, for his new contract, for everything.

?I know as a veteran guy regardless if he's coming off an injury or not. If you're in a big hockey game, he wants it,? forward Brooks Laich said. ?It's just the competitive nature of guys, and that's why he's been around the league. ?

?We've got a fresh goaltender in there, a guy who's been watching and jumping at the bit to get back in there. A guy that's going in there with enthusiasm and experience.?

No hesitation, either, despite the first groin injury of his career. Vokoun did some full-extension saves in practice the past couple days to test it out and said it held up fine.

?You can't go in worried about that. It feels pretty good,? Vokoun said. ?I'm not worried about it. You're trying to stop the puck; you're not worried about anything else.?
