DETROIT -- Although nobody went on the disabled list Friday, some of the Tigers still were battling physical problems.
Shortstop Ramon Santiago, who has had a cold or virus of some sort since the team was in Boston just before the All-Star break, had a 101 degree temperature Friday and didn't play.
"He saw the doctor," Tigers Manager Luis Pujols said. "He's also got a sore throat. I hope he's only going to miss one game."
Shane Halter started in Santiago's place.
Also out of the lineup was Wendell Magee, opening up a spot in center field for George Lombard.
"I talked to Magee," Pujols said. "He's a little sore from the break. I saw him limping last night and told him I was going to give him a day."
Magee already has played in 79 games this season after playing in just 90 all of last season.
Pujols had said he was going to try to get Lombard back in the lineup as soon as possible, but left fielder Bobby Higginson's return from the DL made it more complicated.
"I didn't want to let him go a week or 10 days without playing," Pujols said of Lombard, who has batted .424 in his last eight games, including Friday's 2-for-4 performance. "We're going to have to find a way to let him play, most likely center field or DH."
Lombard made 12 starts in left field with Higginson out, but Friday was his first appearance in Comerica Park's spacious center field.
"It's a big field," Lombard admitted. "If I get a chance to get out there and play, if you told me I was playing right, center or left, at this point if they told me I was playing second or short, I'd want to play. I played a year and a half, two years in the minor leagues (in center field)."
With Santiago out, Lombard assumed the leadoff role.
Halter played third base Thursday with Chris Truby going on the DL. Since Halter had to play shortstop Friday, Craig Paquette returned to play third.
As for the pitching staff, Jose Paniagua has been out with a pulled muscle in his side that he suffered in Boston.
"After he pitched, the next day he was a little sore," Pujols said.
"I threw on the side today and I feel better," Paniagua said. "I think I'll be all right for tomorrow."
Fifteen different players have been on the DL this season and six have had season-ending injuries.
"I have never seen anything like this," Pujols said of the rash of injuries. "It's amazing."
