I don't necessarily want that....but I want something.
Everyone loves the excitement of these ends of games....but a lot of it is garbage. Teams work 35-38 minutes to get a good lead...and then here comes the barrage....esp if its a brand name vs huge underdog.
A shorter shot clock would help. Reward the defense for playing 25 seconds of D to get the ball back. Most of the time in the NBA, teams don't resort to fouling until the last minute...perhaps last 2 minutes. In college, man, sometimes w 5 minutes left....esp when the shot clock was longer.
I'm sick of teams, esp good teams (brand names) going into desperation mode late in games. A team like Duke or Louisville (others but these are great examples with K and Pitino)...they get behind and all of a sudden they are the greatest full court press team ever. They push, shove, hack....all that contact leads to "steals" and easy baskets...the momentum changes...the other team realizes the ref's aren't gonna call anything...and as they up their physicality...a guy flops and its an offensive foul.
Throw in a short 3-point line and the ridiculously archaic 1and1's...and its a recipe for a Duke or Louisville, after getting dominated for 35 minutes...all of a sudden goes from down 10 to tied and the other team is helpless. Also, and its amazing teams don't do this more....you can foul the other team's worst shooter, off the ball, before the ball is even in play...just make it look "unintentional" and no time goes off, and a 60% shooter is at the line...shooting a 1-and-1....miss and you get a jump shot to make up 3 points. Then call timeout (hate that rule too...calling a timeout after a made basket)....rinse and repeat.
I'd like to see something similar to hack-a-shaq....maybe you can foul anyone until under 2 minutes. Last 2 minutes...any foul results in 2 shots and the shooting team gets to pick their shooter.
25-second shot clock....22-foot 3-point line, designated free throw shooters in last 2 minutes. I think you've got a much better game. I've always thought the Ivy League should team up with another conference...maybe get Army and Navy with some others....and have 2 conferences with a title game in football...so its sort of a big league...and experiment w different rules....for football, go to some Canadian rules stuff...for basketball, just do what this long post has said. I think it would bring a lot of viewers and eventually the NCAA would adopt the rules for all.
