Time to nationalize American oil companies

America would benefit in so many ways! First the huge profits that have been accumulating could be used to offset the expense of the Iraq war, which was nothing more than an attempt to sieze oil for American oil companies. Why should we have to pay while the oil companies reap record profits?

Once completely nationalized, oil prices could be set at a much more reasonable price, and fixed there. That would tend to stablize world oil prices as potential profits get recycled into discounts to consumers.

The time is now to take control of our oil companies. The Russians realized this just before their oil assets got sold off. They re-nationalized their oil. Chavez will be next. How long before America wakes up and realizes that unless we do this, one day we will be the ones who can't afford to pay the price, as oil goes to those countries that can.

hows about we just cut the government`s cut out of the equation?....that would help a little...

they don`t do any of the work...they aren`t worrying about shareholders and pension holders...

all they do is get in the way of our procuring our own energy..

they just take the money....

the reason our oil is only 4 bucks a gal is that America is the largest user of oil in the world.

We get reduced rates.

Talking to family in Germany. Their oil is over 9 dollars a gallon.

They just had their furnace filled which uses oil
and it cost them $4,300.00

Not sure how long that lasts but aint that a kick
to the nads.

you cant nationilze oil , it goes against all of our
capitalism principles.

I don't know if you are attempting to make some kind of point here, but I know you aren't dumb enough to think these things are the fault of the new congress - that the trends were not already moving inevitably in this direction.

I suppose by that logic, one would place 100% of the blame of 9/11 on Bush, since after all he was President at the time and it had nothing to do with anything else in the years leading up to the attack, right?

I hope we get a few more Dems in congress and a Dem president, so we can finally take a mature look at our energy and move towards better solutions than just "drill more".

I say this for a number of reasons. If oil were nationalized, it would be a government corporation for the people and by the people. This American corporation would work for the people rather than a select few billionaires in a boardroom somewhere. On top of that, any profits that the nationalized firm makes can go toward developing technologies for greater American independence, such as fuel cells, ethanol and oil shale.

It is safe to say that nationalized oil is the wave of the future. Why should the government settle for letting a wealthy corporation take billions in profits while it takes only a teeny fraction of that in royalties? Other nationalized oil firms, such as PEMEX in Mexico and PDVSA in Venezuela, pump any profits they have straight back to their governments, and hence, the profits go to their people. With America?s current system, instead of helping ourselves, we help a select few. I?m not against companies making a profit, but I can see no reason Exxon?s CEO, Lee Raymond, should receive a $400 million retirement package while we pay $4.00 for a gallon of gas. Wouldn?t it be nice to know that when you fill up at the gas pump, a little of that money that you spend, in some little way, goes right back into your pocket? -Jesse Thomas
