The 20-month-long recession has seen an increase in U.S. government jobs, a Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government report shows.
The author of the study, Donald Boyd, said while the recession has subtracted 6.9 million private jobs since December 2007, the local state and federal government job sector unexpectedly gained 110,000 positions, The New York Times reported Thursday.

"I am a little surprised at the fact that state and local government has remained as stable as it has ... given the depth of the current recession," Boyd told the Times.
Government jobs peaked a year ago, then began to shrink. But the government job sector has begun to grow again as stimulus money becomes available.
The report said the recession's effect on government jobs lags behind the private sector, as layoffs and diminished corporate profits take time to show up as fewer tax dollars.
At the same time, the increase in unemployment creates a rising demand for government services, which provokes a wave of tax raises, said Tad DeHaven, a budget analyst for the Cato Institute.
"That is disturbing," DeHaven said.
