Timing could be right for Bears to draft QB in 2016

The Bears have nine picks in this year?s draft, including two in the fourth round.

Two months ago, Bears general manager Ryan Pace said something at the NFL Scouting Combine that?s worth repeating with the draft only days away.

?There are . . . a handful of quarterbacks in the middle part of the draft that I feel good about and that we?ve got to make sure we?ve accurately graded,? Pace said. ?That?s where our scouts earn their money.?

The widespread use of spread, often-gimmicky offenses in college has made evaluations difficult.

?It goes beyond the quarterback, too,? said SiriusXM analyst Phil Savage, the former Cleveland Browns GM. ?The way the college game is now ? same sport, different game.?

But the Bears could be an ideal place for a young quarterback to learn. It starts with chairman George McCaskey, who has promised to be patient with Pace and Fox. On the surface, it?s different than other organizations.

?There?s just so much volatility with coaches,? Miller said. ?Look at Lovie Smith. He?s got a rookie quarterback, and he ends up being fired [by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers]. The impatience is from ownership.

?It?s not really an ideal situation in terms of how you want to bring your quarterback along here in the modern era of football.

?I?ve always believed that by Year 4 to Year 5, a quarterback?s career should be taking off.?

Executives say the Bears appear locked in on Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott and are increasingly anxious about the Cowboys taking him at No. 4 or (to a lesser degree) the Giants at No. 10 before Chicago?s turn at No. 11.

The Bears probably aren?t enamored enough with Elliott to part with the haul necessary to trade all the way up to Dallas? spot, but that can?t be ruled out. Chicago has a huge hole at running back after letting Matt Forte walk to the Jets in free agency, and Bears running backs coach Stan Drayton recruited Elliott to Ohio State and coached him for two seasons.

Elliott confirmed the Bears? intense interest in an interview with ?The Dan Patrick Show? on Tuesday, listing Chicago as the only team he?s met with this spring that truly ?loves? him.

Could be a trade in the works for Chicago to move up because they really want Elliott, but they also like the Oregon DE, Buckner if he falls and they don't move up!!

"the bunker"
I`m seeing comparisons to Adrian Peterson....that might be bridge too far, imo(I`m not sure he`ll be as impactful as gurley or leveon bell).....not to say he won`t be solid...just not sure the hype hasn`t lapped legit expectations...

I wouldn`t be disappointed if the ravens grabbed him(but I`m hoping for bosa or ramsey)....

mayock`s final mock on nfl network at 8 pm eastern...
