mine....so tough to choose just one:

ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL 1847-1922
His interest in teaching the deaf led indirectly to his invention of the telephone, an event that transformed the way the world communicates. A tireless inventor with a philanthropic bent, Bell funded the Aerial Experiment Association in Nova Scotia.

SIR SANDFORD FLEMING 1827-1915
His mind was always ticking. He envisaged a railway route to the Pacific long before he helped build it. He co-founded the Royal Canadian Institute. He gave the world its international system of standard time and Canada its first postage stamp. With it came a national emblem, the beaver.

DR FREDERICK BANTING 1891-1941
With Dr. Charles Best, he succeeded in isolating and purifying insulin, the hormone secreted by the pancreas which regulates the level of sugar in the blood. Their discovery, for which they were awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize, led to the treatment of diabetes.

TERRY FOX 1958-1981
After losing a leg to cancer, he set out on his 1980 Cross-Canada Marathon of Hope, raising millions for research and inspiring millions to follow suit every year. He gave the disease a human face and when he died at 23, all Canada was united in its admiration and sorrow.

WAYNE GRETZKY 1961-
Number 99, an all-time points champion had skill, savvy and class that lifted hockey to new heights. In the 1980s, ?The Great One' dominated Canada's national game and became a national ambassador for a sport -- and a nation.

SIR WILFRID LAURIER 1841-1919
Named Wilfrid after the hero of a Walter Scott novel, Laurier?s matin?e-idol looks and golden voice seemed made for the silver screen. Instead, it was tolerance, eloquence and his ability to bridge the French-English divide that made him a real-life hero to Canada's people.

SIR JOHN A. MACDONALD 1815-1891
A brilliant politician, he steered the ship of Confederation deftly into port, coaxing the two solitudes of Qu?bec and Ontario to co-operate in supporting the vessel. A man who loved books, babies and booze, often ruthless, often compassionate; he was Canada's fallible, friendly giant.

DAVID SUZUKI 1936-
His work on the fruit fly led the respected geneticist to worry about nature's vulnerability. As host of The Nature of Things, he continues to alert us to those worries. From toxic lakes to rain forests, he has shown Canadians and the world an environment in crisis. Now, his foundation is trying to help halt the damage.

TECUMSEH 1768-1813
Like an early Martin Luther King, the Shawnee chief had a dream: a dream of a pan-Indian movement and enough land to guarantee his people's way of life. His support of Brock's attack on Detroit ensured Brock's victory, but ultimately, did not further his own.

DAVID THOMPSON 1770-1857
One of the best pioneering geographers on the continent, Thompson surveyed and mapped almost two million square miles of western North America. Although he died in poverty and obscurity, the author of David Thompson's Narrative became one of Canada's most loved historical figures.

PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU 1919-2000
He gave Canadians their Constitution, Charter of Rights, official bilingualism and a new word: Trudeaumania. With his razor-sharp intellect and haughty charisma, he towered over our political and cultural landscape, earning passionate adulation among admirers and deep contempt among opponents.

Tough question......took my a while to do my own ranking, but I've narrowed it to these four in no particular order yet. I've picked the four that have most shaped my life and been inspirations to me even though I'm an American. These are truly inspirational people from our northern border and i thank the lord that I am blessed to have them as part of my life although i do not know any of them personally.

- Conrad Bain (dad on different strokes)

- Tommy Chong (of cheech and chong fame)

- Celine Dion

- Howie Mandel

with a gun to my head, I think tommy chong has influenced my life the most.

talk about one tough question????????

The above post was just in jest, but I mean come on.....There is no debate. I mean none. Not even close. What gives you the nerve to ask such a dumb question. I'm assuming you are from Canada, but please, are you people that ignorant that you don't even know who your most famous person is.....

Heres a hint : ERIC GAGNE

he's obviously the greatest person to ever come out of our neigbors from the north. What a dumb poll.....

Sir Wilfried who? Sir John who? Wayne who??? Pierre who???
Who are these quacks, and who cares what the did.....I'm sure some of what they did is important to a few people, but please, what Eric Gagne has done and is doing, will be talked about for 300 years. A recent poll in toronto asked 1000 torontoians if they could have tickets to a leafs game 7 or just a regular season dodger game where gagne would save the game, 999 of them said theyd like to go to chavez ravine.....you must have been the 1. No apology necessary, its implied, I'm sure you know realize your mistake and you too will vote for mr. gagne.....

Now, if you want a real debate, lets get one going about who the greatest mongolian is??? that we can argue, for this there is no argument or debate, only one right answer, and since you people are too dumb to do what needs to be done, I'll do it for you.

I know annoint you SIR ERIC GAGNE

there, im finished

like your list Kickserv however not sure about a few.

PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU 1919-2000
was hated in the west he favoured one region the east over the west Alberta during the oil crisis. also the constitution was signed without Quebec. so probably did just as much to divide. also was against Meech Lake this would not have solved all of the problems however it was the closest to pleasing all provinces and Quebec. any quebec government would want more now.

DAVID SUZUKI 1936-
do not get me wrong I respect what he tries to do, however how much has his foundation been given, and what have they done, have they founded a park, what have they done with the money they have been given.

missing King, sure he talked his, dog and went to people who claimed they could talk with his dead mother, still no one lasted longer as PM. he knew the game, maybe being a LITTLE crazy helped.

would add in politcs Dief the Chief, I mean Diefenbaker is probably the most noted conservative PM on the 20th century, Mulrony will also be there in time. okay scrapped a Avro (military plane).

many artists and writers, Billy Crystal line was good " thought I was at the Canadian Oscars"

but since the anniversary of VIMY was yesterday, still some verterans alive from that WW 1 Battle.

GENERAL SIR ARTHUR CURRIE 1875-1933
During the Great War, he was the first Canadian appointed commander of the Canadian Corps.
A leader determined not to needlessly sacrifice his men, he contributed during the last 100 days to what was perhaps WWI's most successful Allied offensive.

one that should win or come close CD Howe. During WW2 he was called minister of everything. in charge of the war effort and helped create the St. Lawrence waterway. some elected officials accomplish more in a few years than most do in hundred.

thanks
