TAMPA - Following the Week 2 contest between the Nashville Kats and the Columbus Destroyers last season, two former teammates sat and talked.

They shared highlights of their 2003 ArenaBowl XVII victory and even talked of playing together again. Never did T.T. Toliver and John Kaleo expect to be together during the 2007 season as members of the Tampa Bay Storm.

"I think last year once we played each other, we sat back and talked and the thing that came out of our mouths is that we would love to play with each other again and I'll be dang it happened this year," former Nashville Kat Toliver revealed of his conversation with former Columbus Destroyer quarterback Kaleo.

The two will pair up for the Storm, and for the first time since 2003, in tonight's season opener against the Orlando Predators.

When each player departed Tampa Bay, it left an uneasy wake.

Kaleo was the first to depart, immediately after that championship season, landing with the Los Angeles Avengers for a rich contract.

Not long after receiving his championship ring from Tampa Bay, it was found the diamonds weren't diamonds. Instead the quarterback received cubic zirconia stones as did several other free agents, who left the team via free agency.

It seemed clear that Kaleo and Storm coach Tim Marcum would never share the same franchise colors again. It appears time does heal wounds.

When Tampa Bay traded for Kaleo in October, it was obvious differences between Kaleo and Marcum had been worked out.

"I decided to come back after I got my real diamonds in my ring," Kaleo said half-joking with a sly grin. "We ironed our whole situation out. Coach knows I'm an opinionated guy. He's opinionated. I figured out the reason why we're like that. He's an Aquarius and I'm an Aquarius, so I don't think that's a good mix."

Toliver's departure wasn't of his own will. Following a couple of incidences, which included a shouting match with former teammate David Saunders following the Storm's overtime road loss to the second-year New Orleans VooDoo in 2005, Toliver was sent to Nashville.

"When I think about that, I just realize that it was all my fault," Toliver said - sugarcoating nothing. "I can't blame anybody but me because, like I said, I was young and dumb and I probably did some things that I shouldn't have done. The good part about it is that they forgave me and I forgave myself."

Orlando was responsible for two of the Storm's nine losses in their 7-9 2006 campaign, which was the first time the team sat out of the playoffs in franchise history - dating to when they were the Pittsburgh Gladiators (1987-1990).

Orlando was also responsible for the Storm's need at quarterback during the offseason when Shane Stafford signed a free-agent contract with the Predators in September.

As bad as that could have turned out for the team, Marcum got back the last quarterback to lead him to a championship.

"We can win a championship with John Kaleo because we've already done it," he said. "In my opinion we could have won a championship with Shane Stafford. You just have to put the right players around both those guys."

Predators vs. Storm Game Preview

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: In two games against Tampa Bay last season, Orlando had most productive offensive performance, scoring 67 points, and the stingiest defense in the second game, allowing only 13 points. The Preds were the National Conference Champions in 2006 defeating the Dallas Desperados. The ArenaBowl XX runner-ups own 9-7 record in season openers, including two consecutive victories. Orlando has had 15 consecutive winning seasons and 15 consecutive trips to the playoffs, appearing in a record seven ArenaBowls. Predators head coach Jay Gruden begins his 8th season as head coach and 10th season overall with the Predators.QB Shane Stafford, who will return to Tampa Bay to face his old team, compiled 236 TDs on 1,091 completions for 15,667 yards in five years with Tampa.

ABOUT THE STORM: Tampa Bay has 80 career regular-season home victories, 11 of which are against the Predators. Including four years in Pittsburgh, (1988-91), the franchise holds the AFL record for regular-season home victories with 88 (Orlando has 78 and Arizona has 73). AFL Hall of Fame Coach Tim Marcum returns for his 19th AFL season, 13th with the Storm. Marcum is the AFL?s winningest coach with 181 victories and is 12-6 in season openers. QB John Kaleo is back in Tampa Bay (2000-03) where he had 187 TDs on 794 completions for 10,264 yards during his previous stint. The Storm has had possession of the ball for the most time in the league over the past three seasons, averaging 31:27 per game. WR/LB Lawrence Samuels enters his 13th season with Storm, tying him for second all-time with Hunkie Cooper, and one behind Sherdrick Bonner.

Why to Watch

Yankees vs Redsox! Michigan-Ohio State! Duke-North Carolina! These are some of sports great rivalries. When you talk about the greatest rivalry in the AFL the conversations starts and ends with the War on I-4. These two interstate foes battle twice year for bragging rights and more importantly division and ArenaBowl titles. In a year where there is so much unpredictability with the new rules and so many roster changes, every game makes a difference. So, it?s not too absurd to think about the possible playoff implications down the road. Then there is the Shane Stafford factor. Stafford was the prize free agent on the market in the off-season and he was lured away by Orlando. Expect an awful lot of booing during the introductions and another hard fought and close game that will be decided in the final minutes.

Keys to the game

1. The Storm must protect Kaleo. The Predators were dominant in the playoffs up front and their defense sparked a run to an appearance in the ArenaBowl. Despite losing sack leader Henry Taylor, the Preds front four is still talented with the likes of Charles Hill, Greg White and LB Marlon Moye-Moore. Remember Jay Gruden lost big time pass rushers like EJ Burt before last season and he simply just reloaded. If you also consider the Storm?s big men did not perform very well last season and Kaleo showed in Columbus if he does not get consistent protection he can be forced into some mistakes.

2. Predators secondary must play aggressive. Tampa is deep at wide receiver with both talent and experience. Lawrence Samuels is complimented by smaller but much more explosive group of Terrill Shaw, TT. Toliver and Demetrius Bendross. It will be tough for Orlando to match up in space especially after losing their top three defensive backs. Lin-J Shell takes over in the middle alongside a pair of AFL rookies. But because of the type of pressure the Predators can bring, the Orlando secondary must crowd the Tampa receivers by being aggressive at the line of scrimmage, which will not allow Kaleo an easy check down or throw if he gets pressured.

3. Which coach makes the key adjustments! This game features two of the leagues greatest and most successful coaches in League history. Jay Gruden and Tim Marcum know each other extremely well and in the past there were no real surprises as they faced off twice a year. But with the new rule changes, it?s hard to predict how much these AFL veteran coaches have changed their strategies. But the one thing is for certain in my mind is the one who makes the proper adjustments at the right time in this game will give his team the best chance to come out on top.

Key Match Ups

Orlando DE Greg White vs. Tampa Bay G Dwayne Morgan and TE Tom Laleita

Morgan and Laleita are both rookies and they are about to get introduced to the famed War on I-4. But if that wasn?t enough, their first assignment will come against Greg White. White is an impact player who brings tremendous pressure. His sack total did not reflect the type of disruptive force he was for Jay Gruden?s defense. Both rookies are big and both are over 300 lbs. They must adjust to the speed of the indoor game which could cause some to be a step slower as they are figuring things out early in their first game. If White dominates early the Storm offense may not recover.

Orlando DB Ryan Bowers vs. Tampa Bay WR Lawrence Samuels

While Lin-J shell will be dealing with Demetrius Bendross and Terrill Shaw in the middle, pay attention to Lawrence Samuels. It seems like he?s been in the League forever and despite losing a step he continues to put up big numbers (115 receptions in 2006). Bowers will be playing his first AFL game and because of his size he should draw Samuels often in this game. Bowers? biggest challenge will come in the red zone where he must match Samuels physicality inside the 10 where body position plays a huge part.

QB Shane Stafford vs. the Tampa Bay secondary

Talk about knowing your opponent. Stafford faced DB Lynarise Elpheage, and the rest of the Tampa defense every day in practice. He also saw former Predator Jeroid Johnson twice last season. It will be very important for Tampa to change some of their tendencies and try to mix up coverages and looks in the hopes of taking Stafford out of his comfort zone.
