Great article......full of lots of good info. Thanks for posting it.

One thing really stuck with me. It was about Martinez of the Red Sox. Article talks about his weight training in the off season. While it may sound good to bulk up and put on muscle, I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing when it comes to pitching and accuracy. I can only offer some ancedotal info, since I don't know the mechanics of pitching. But, I used to play basketball (at the gym) and developed a fairly good shooting touch. After I started a weight program (this was years ago) I couldn't shoot worth a damn. I guess the muscles were used to a diffferent rythem. Like I said, I know noting about this subject, but it will be interesting to see how Martinex pitches his next few outings. He's probably in a good fade position from the number alone, since every square on planet earth will expect him to "bounce back" in the next game. Only trouble is -- I think he'll go against the Oriloes, which is basically like throwing against a minor league team.

Id' be interested in other's thoughts about fading the likes of Schilling, Brown, Martinez, Clemens, and so forth in the early part of the season at the inflated pruces.

regarding strenght training

regarding strenght training

Of course many pitchers R not going into winter training to bulk...they R going into strenght training....this compiles of reps 12-15 and training 1 body part primarily a week and secondarily hitting that muscle 2 x's a week. Let me explain....lets take biceps....ya hit ur 9-11 sets on biceps on monday and come thursday ya hit back well...ur primary target on biceps was on mon but when hitting the bk muscles ur hitting not only back as ur primary but ur biceps again as a secondary cause ya cant work ur back w/out hitting ur biceps......so in conclusion ur hitting ur muscles 2x per week but only once primary and again as a secondary......hitting weight training has proved to be a great upgrade to performance on the field.....if ya look at the stats as to 10,20. 30 even 40 yrs and beyond most athlets now R training w/weights and have shattered records of the past let alone come bk from injury to pitch many yrs beyond their prime when athletes of the past would have retired. So Pitchers R not out to bulk up so to speak but to increase lean muscle mass to increase endurance..Martinez is not a massive looking gu so U can tell he isnt out to look imprssive in the weight room but through weight traing he will increase his endurance, quickness and enable him to become stronger....guys like Sosa,Giambi have used weight training to become stronger and quicker at the plateand yes they R bulked because of doing sets of 6-8 reps.....let me clarify...being bulked doesnt mean U become slower but stronger...these guys have found the medium as well have others...the stats prove this is all athletes who workout.....going bk to what Nolan was stating on lifting and and not shooting worth a damn ...well Jordan worked out daily with the weights 5 x a week...is Jordan buffed?...NO but he was and still is tone and it made him more agile and quick and strong to play more minutes...of course the body takes a toll and nearing the age of 40 it will slow as it goes....my point is that weight training is in and will continue to be as long as it produces numbers.......check out Gonzales of the D-backs...does he look buff NO...but the man is tone...quick...and has the endurance of a horse....Its how you train, the reps and weight ur lifting...all athletes especially in baseball dont train the same...they each have demands they want to accomplish and to each a different taining program...GL guys

not to beat a dead horse here but i just read your comments and have to agree... and especially for those guys on here reading this who have sons and stuff, most high school and college guys dont have enough core strength and sure as hell arent in danger of getting 'big' ... so many parents and players say. ' i want a baseball specific regimen,' when in reality they just need to get stronger....they dont realize that even the 'little guys' like lofton and whatnot are still pretty strong and in shape.... though a little vitamin s does help a few guys out in the short term.
