If you hadn't heard, tote players were in for a shock last week at Hollywood Park in an otherwise nondescript weekday race. It seems the winner had gone off at 9-2 when he crossed the wire. Shortly thereafter, it was discovered that the horse was actually 3-5. The princely sum of $118,000 had been bet on him squarely in the nose in the last minute at a small off track facility in Lewiston, Maine. The betting, ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL, didn't show up on the tote until after the race, again, ALL PERFECTLY LEGAL. Despite the appparant legalities, the California Horse Racing board has launched an investigation. At the root of the investigation is why such a monster sum was bet on such a seemingly inconsequential race at an off track site at the other end of the country. While this is all PERFECTLY LEGAL, it does play havoc with tote board players to be sure!
