Tournament games and thoughts

I've decided to go with one single thread for all of my tournament thoughts/plays. . . so here we go:

Thoughts:

Arizona did not get as shafted as everyone believes. In fact, I like how every potential game comes up for them: they have much greater depth than Cincy or the Zags which helps to play one of them on Saturday, they have a few days to prepare for a physical battle with Illinois, then could potentially catch Kansas in the Elite Eight if the Jayhawks make it that far and Arizona's key in the first matchup was superior depth. Finally, they have a few days to prepare for Kentucky which will be essential to come up with a gameplan and work on handling the ball.

Obviously I am like most fans amazed at the lack of thinking by the selection committee especially with Arizona/Kentucky, but its easy to pick on them every year regarding certain decisions. Still, it was obvious that Kentucky and Arizona are the top two teams in the land and to have them potentially face off in the Final Four instead of the championship game is just pure ignorance as it looks like the committee threw the brackets together at the last minute.

Tournament Dogs are the ONLY way to go. . . think about it. . . there are always a lot of upsets (unless we are talking about the #1,#2, or #3 seeds) which means the dog automatically covers. . . if the favorite wins, you still have a shot with the points. I especially like dogs that played well on the road during the year. . . two come to mind from the numbers I have: Penn and Gonzaga are both playing higher seeded teams with road records that are not as impressive.

My predicted Final Four: Kentucky (easy choice), Arizona (of course I have to believe in my team), Texas (should have a huge advantage playing in San Antonio provided they win the first two games), and Syracuse (gotta pick at least one team that isn't a #1 seed and I don't think Miss. State gets it done like some believe).

Championship: Arizona 94 Texas 87

On with my early picks:

Bama laying 1 over Indiana. . . a higher seed that is favored or a suprisingly shallow favorite is an automatic play for me. Bama got in, now they prove they belong in the tourney.

Tulsa +2 over Dayton. . . same reasoning as above. . . #13 seed only getting 2 points? Any fool can wake up in the morning, head down to Vegas, look at the bracket, see this line on the board and pick Dayton based on seeding!

Zags +1 over Cincy. . . should be a tough game, but the Zags have a great road record while Cincy got to this tournament from playing at home.

Weber State +7 and ML over Wisky. . . gotta ride the streak

Wisconsin Milwaukee +5 and ML over Notre Dame. . . one of these #12 seeds will win but I think both Weber and WM advance.

Central Michigan +4 over Creighton. . . I believe CMU will beat Duke and get to the Sweet Sixteen!

Penn +3 over Oklahoma State. . . Quackers are solid on the road and I expect them to continue to play well the first game.

BYU +4 over UConn. . . in my bracket, I have UConn winning until they face Texas, but from a betting perspective, this is the only way to go. I expect at least two #12 seeds to win outright and wouldn't be shocked to see three or all four

Will look at the other games, but as I said, will stick to mostly dogs . . . especially those where the line looks funny based on the seeding by a tournament committee that we already know was not the sharpest unit in the history of the NCAA Tournament!

Best of luck to everyone and go Wildcats (Arizona of course!)

Thanks for the info Nickel...maybe you'll get the views you want even though you didn't say you were betting your entire account...:D

like a lot of your plays, but I'm upset you are going against my Dayton flyers...the line makes me nervous, but I still think that they are a good club and that they are going to prove that they deserved a 4 seed...plus, ollie purnell is a hot item in the coaching market, and he will make sure that his team gets the wins...we'll see if he actually leave UD though...

Good Luck!

LOL. . . the # of views will be fun to keep track of, but not the reason why I decided only one thread. . . there will be so many damn threads going in here and anybody who looks for my picks on a certain day will know where they are without having to check two other threads that I started from other days (if that makes any sense. . . at least it does to me!)

GL to you and your Dayton team as well. . . my pick is based strictly on the line vs. seeding for that particular game which may be good news to you if you know both of these teams well.

I do know what you mean...

and as for tulsa and dayton, I know the flyers well, and I've heard/read about tulsa a little bit and they seem to be fairly hot right now...but they lack an inside game, and with Kieth "the whale", marshall, hall, and good bench players shutting down the outside, I don't see dayton having too much of a problem...

but I really don't know much about tulsa:shrug:

I'm just excited to see the game and I'll be on the flyers for a couple units...

(BWT, don't you find it hard to place huge bets on your favorite team?)

Good question. . . I find it hard to lay off of Arizona when they are a dog, but haven't had to worry about it this year except the Kansas game. . . but for this year, it has been easy for me to just stay away from Arizona games for the most part and just sit back and root for a win.

Good analysis and I took that Sienna play last night (thanks!)

I like what you have and agree with most but i really like Holy Cross. I think they can win this SU. They have won @ BC and have played kansas and kentucky down to the wire the last 2 yrs in the NCAA tourney. Marquette will be well rested but could also be rusty.. Holy Cross WILL not be intimdated if they werent against kansas and kentucky who had much better teams than marquette. Marquette should win but + 11 is good. This line has gone from +11.5 to 10 in some places...

Also liking Weber St.
LSU to maybe upset Texas 2nd round
I like Upenn
Tulsa as well
Look out for Troy St if they get on fire from 3, with the hundreds they shoot a game who knows!!

Good luck Nickel. But that CMU line keeps going up. Now they're getting +5.

thats what happens when you play a team(creighton) who has been to the tourney 5 straight times...and this is CMUs first in a while. How many people in here would know about CMU had I not tailed them hard this year???

if your a square - think about it...would ya take cmu? or all mighty creighton who blew out the salukies?

Adding Arizona laying 14.5 first half over Vermont. .. Vermont hasn't even arrived in Salt Lake City yet. . . Arizona has had more than enough time to rest up and I think we see them play like a #1 seed for at least the first half.

Should be a 20+ point lead at the half.

Well, rarely do I do this, but I've decided to switch my Gonzaga/Cincy play completely and instead will play Cincy laying 1. After looking into this game a little more, I just feel that Cincy has played teams that resemble the Zags to a higher degree (such as Louisville) while the Zags haven't faced a team quite like Cincy. Usually I would simply toss the game out if I didn't like a side all of the sudden, but in this case, I feel Cincy is the right play and should win this game.

Keeping the rest (at least for now!)

Adding Eastern Washington +7.5 for a good sized play. . . both teams have been sitting around with the snow storm in Laramie. . . think the points will be very valuable in this one and I really like this Eastern team.

Pretty good day. . . would have been better if I stuck with my original play on the Zags, but c'mon, CIncy should have won that game. I think Arizona will embarass this team on Saturday but I assume most will take the points. On to Friday:

Already mentioned I'm on Penn +3 and Alabama pk (new line from Carib) so here are more plays:

LSU laying 5 over Purdue. . . along with playing funny lines where the seeding shows the favorite should be laying more points, there are those 8-9 games where the spread should be nearly a pk. Yet we have LSU laying 5 over Purdue. . . I think Purdue is so overrated and LSU is playing their best ball right now. Both teams thrive playing at home, but LSU should continue with their momentum here.

Oregon laying 5 over Utah. . . same reasoning as the LSU pk. While I believe Oregon will not beat Kentucky on Sunday, I think they will give the Cats all they want.

Still looking at others including NIT

Gotta think ASU has a chance against Kansas as well. . . should be interesting.

Adding:

Manhattan +7.5 over Syracuse. . . Yes, I have Cuse going to the Final Four, but 7.5 is too many against this Manhattan team the way they shoot the ball. Should be able to keep it close.

Butler +8 over Miss St. . . several are on the Miss St bandwagon, but I'm not convinced yet. . . especially with a veteran team like Butler that can shoot the rock. Defense will get you so far, but you've gotta have an offensive punch as well and I don't believe Miss St has it yet. If it is a low scoring, defesive game, then eight points is a lot.

Where have you been G? Been waiting for your picks. . .

I hate to even throw away a penny, but couldn't resist parlaying the six teams that I am playing so far (Bama, Penn, LSU, Oregon, Butler, Manhattan) at 40:1 odds. . . small bet to win 20 units.
