Troy Trojans aim to put disappointing loss behind in getting set to face Appalachian State on Monday

There is no rest for the weary, nor time for the Troy basketball team to feel sorry for itself.

After letting a 13-point, second-half lead slip away on Saturday during a 74-73 home loss to Coastal Carolina, the Trojans have to get off the deck and face Appalachian State on Monday night in Trojan Arena.

It?s a big Sun Belt contest for both teams. Troy is 2-4 in league play and the Mountaineers are just above the Trojans in the standings with a 3-4 mark. Appalachian State comes into Trojan Arena on a three-game losing skid.

?It?s still going to be there, so it?s kind of hard trying to put it behind you,? Troy senior forward Juan Davis Jr. said of the hurt from the disappointing loss. ?But it gives you motivation to come out and handle business on Monday night because it?s getting down to the wire.

?We?ve got to go out and handle business so we can be in the race and do the things we want to do this season.?

Troy managed just two field goals in the final 13 minutes against Coastal Carolina, yet still had a chance to win it on the final possession until a pass was stolen before the Trojans could get a shot off.

The team played extremely well in the opening half and carried a 14-point lead to the dressing room during the break before Coastal Carolina stormed back.

Troy senior guard Wesley Person became the all-time leader in career 3-pointers made in Sun Belt history when he broke the mark in the first half. Person set the record at 324 with his second trey of the half, and hit another one before halftime. However, Person didn?t score the rest of the way and only got two more shots off against a tight Coastal defense.

?To think about how well we played in the first half and then have a total meltdown and let them dig back into the game and then not finish the way you wanted to is tough,? Person said after the game. ?We can?t get too low on this loss. We really wanted this one, but we have to prepare for App State. They?re a really good team, but we?ll be ready for them.?

Person has another record in sight as the Brantley native is just 27 points shy of becoming the all-time leading scorer in school history. The current record is held by Anthony Reed (1986-90), who scored 1,865.

Appalachian State is led by guards Ronshad Shabazz and Justin Forrest. Shabazz averages 18.9 points per outing, while Forrest averages 14.3.

?This one will hurt, but you can?t let it hurt past tomorrow (Sunday),? Troy coach Phil Cunningham said after the game. ?We have to come in and prepare for App State and be ready to bounce back against them.

?That?s a disappointing one because it?s one that we felt like we should have gotten, but we didn?t finish it.?
