Sabres' captain is out. Very bad sez paper:

Barnes' absence is no laughing matter for the Sabres' playoff chances. They have 14 games left and enter tonight's game four points and two teams out of eighth place in the Eastern Conference.

"We can't kid ourselves," Ruff said. "That's a huge loss."

Barnes is Buffalo's second-leading scorer with 17 goals and 31 assists. He was playing on the first penalty-killing unit and the power play. He was one of the team's best faceoff men.

"It's going to be a tougher road without a guy like Stu," Sabres defenseman Rhett Warrener said. "It's a big loss.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buff is four points from final playoff berth in Conf, and last in NE Division. Ott is one point from tie with Boston for lead in NE Division.

Ott next game is at home thurs vs NYR

Anaheim at Detroit

Anaheim at Detroit

Anaheim is 13-18-2 ATS on road
Detroit is 26-7-2 ATS at home

Teams have met twice this season, Detroit won both. 1-0 at Anaheim (Giguere/Hasek) and 5-3 at Detroit (Shields/Hasek).

Giguere is 0-2-0 vs Detroit, with 1.97 gga, and .934 save pct
Giguere sports 1.55 gga in his 11 road starts. He's just off a loss giving up 3 goals, and he usually rebounds nice in next.

Anaheim is 8-2 ATS as road dog of 1 goal or more
Detroit is 13-10 ATS as home favorite of 1 goal or more

Both of the two meetings at Detroit last season Anaheim lost by one goal.

Anaheim haven't lost by two goals or more in last 6 road trips
Detroit is 3-3 in last 6 home games covering a -1.5 spread

Detroit has had trouble with teams of late out of playoffs and playing for nothing but pride. This month Columbus defeated them at home, and Det won OT on road vs FL and TB.

Detroit is playing their 3rd game in 4 nights tonight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Detroit defense has trouble, this from Helene St James from Detroit free press:

The trade deadline is coming at a time when the Wings seem to be in a defensive funk. They've given up 13 goals in the past four games, well above their league second-best 2.14 overall goals-against average. But they've inserted relatively inexperienced players such as defensemen Jesse Wallin and Maxim Kuznetsov and forward Jason Williams into the lineup, as well as tried different players on special teams. Kris Draper saw some rare power-play time in Sunday's 5-3 victory over the Rangers, and both Pavel Datsyuk and Boyd Devereaux are killing penalties.

"I think our defense has played pretty well," Bowman said. "We've got eight of them playing now, and don't forget, we're playing a lot of different guys on the penalty kill. We're getting other guys into the mix. It's good to do different things and not really have to suffer for it
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and ticker on Ducks poor offense "Anaheim was held to a season-low 14 shots in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues. Andy McDonald and defenseman Ruslan Salei tallied for the Ducks, who have just one win in their last six games.

The Mighty Ducks have had trouble scoring all season and have been held to two goals or fewer in five of their last seven games. Their power play, which is the worst in the NHL, has converted just once in their last 25 chances."

Detroit is 23-6-5 all time vs Anaheim, and 12-1-3-1 at home vs Ducks all time.

Anaheim 4-5-1 last 10
Detroit is 8-2 last 10

Anaheim go to Phila for next game, thurs
Detroit to Columbus for next game, thurs.

Johnson in

Johnson in

D. Goold in St Louis paper sez

"Goalie Brent Johnson will make his seventh consecutive start tonight. The Blues are clearly leaning on him to get them into and then through the playoffs. The Blues have been an easy fit for any rumor involving goaltenders, but Johnson is their guy. It is doubtful a trade will be made."

STL is 3-10 ATS vs Divison opponents

Nashville is 2-7-1 ATS last 10 overall
