Tuesday Morning QB

- The college football roller coaster hit hard last week, as big names stumbled all over the place and the seas parted for a new #1 to step in?although for how long, we?ll have to wait and see.
If you?re into reading tea leaves and the stars (or if you have Biff?s Sports Almanac), you might have seen USC?s loss to the Oregon State Beavers coming, but those leaves would have been something else if they also foretold the rest of turmoil at the top of the polls, as the rest of us didn?t see it coming.
When the Trojans were roughed up by Oregon St. (losing 27-21 and failing to cover as 25.5-point favorite), it meant an immediate banishment from the No. 1 spot in the polls. When the smoke cleared they came out of the weekend clinging to No. 9.
With USC getting upset, the door was wide open for teams like Oklahoma, Georgia and even Florida to seize the day and grab top spot?but unfortunately for favorite bettors, SoCal wasn?t the only top team to suffer an untimely loss.
No. 3 Georgia took the field against No. 8 Alabama knowing that an impressive performance could land them the vacant No. 1 position.
Going into the game the Bulldogs, wearing their alternate black jerseys, were listed as a 6.5-point home fave against the Crimson Tide. The result? As ESPN said, ?Alabama hands blacked-out UGA a black eye? as the Tide rolled on the Bulldogs 41-30. So much for #1, as Georgia fell to 11 in the AP and 10 in the USA Today polls (and Nick Saban smirked).
Ranked No. 4 coming into the week, the Florida Gators were looking forward to giving their fans a blowout win over the Mississippi Rebels. Favored by 23 points and with a potential shot at #1 if things fell right, they responded by laying an egg.
The Gators turned the ball over three times and had a PAT blocked with 3:28 left in the fourth quarter, a single that would?ve tied the game. Ole Miss scored the huge upset, winning 31-30 and sending the Florida elevator all the way down to 13th in the USA Today poll.
There was more than just Big Ten positioning up for grabs with the No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers in Ann Arbor to play the Michigan Wolverines, listed as 4.5-point road favorites.
The Badgers could move up in the polls with a win over the Wolverines and remain in the hunt for top spot in the conference.
Unfortunately, Michigan pulled out all the stops and defeated their Big Ten rivals by a final of 27-25, dropping Wisconsin out of the Top 10 (18th in the AP and 17th in the USA Today).
What of the Oklahoma Sooners? They covered as 18.5-point favorites at home in a 35-10 win over No. 24 TCU and thanks to that became the new No. 1 team in both the AP and USA Today polls.
Enjoy the stay Oklahoma, but don?t get too comfy as it looks like another wild NCAA season is unfolding, similar to last year.
- Although they went 8-12 in their last 20 games, the Milwaukee Brewers managed to defeat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in their season finale, while the New York Mets collapsed down the stretch for the second straight year, allowing the Brew Crew to claim the NL Wild Card berth in 2008.
The Brewers will begin their National League Divisional Series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
SPORTSBETTING.COM has Milwaukee listed at +500 to take the National League pennant.
The final playoff spot to be determined lies in the AL Central between the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox as they?ll play one of those cool one-game playoffs today to determine the AL Central champ.
- In the NFL there were some notable happenings as well.
Bookies were expecting a relatively low scoring game in the Arizona Cardinals at New York Jets game, setting the Total at 43.5.
However, the final score went Over with extreme prejudice as the Jets, clad in their vintage jerseys, and the Cards combined for 91 points in a 56-35 New York victory.
Washington got a huge boost of confidence while their bettors got a boost of cash as the Redskins covered at +10.5-points to beat the Dallas Cowboys 26-24.
By virtue of that win, the ?Skins find themselves tied with the Dallas Cowboys for second in the NFC East.
The lowly Kansas City Chiefs earned their first win, handing the AFC West division leading Denver Broncos their first loss of the season with a 33-19 win. The Chiefs covered as 9.5-point underdogs.
The Monday nighter started slow, but turned into a very entertaining battle, as the Steelers and Ravens turned up the heat in the second half. Under bettors must have felt like they were in okay shape as the teams came out for the third quarter, but a barrage of points sent the game flying ?Over? the 34.5 posted total (they posted 27 points after half)
The host Steelers, who were 6-point favorites, won 23-20 in overtime.
Baseball playoffs are about to begin and the NCAA football and NFL seasons are beginning to get interesting, with all due respect to December, this is the most wonderful time of the year.
Have a good week.
