As usual Pat Quinn has to be one of the worst GM's in the league and has the guts to take a shot at Cliff Fletcher who made the best trades in the history of this club only to be forced to get rid of players by management.

Best moves
Colorado, NJ , Montreal (Fiset was a great pickup)
Worst
Washington by a mile
Will see
NYR-Poti has a great upside having Leech on his team
Philly-Gave up a fair amount for a 39 year old, will be worth it if it get's them to the cup.

Pho/Bas Under 5 -110

Good Luck Everyone

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the Oates trade. Why is it the worst? They would have had no chance to advance if by slim chance they made the playoffs, and had already decided they would not give him a longer deal. Why not trade him to PHI and add to their draft and get a young goalie too? Seems to me that Philly gave up a ton to rent him till May even if they do win the Cup.

I thought Washington made out like bandits. Oates was probably gone anyway and even if he would have stayed, he is 40 and this team has to look at 2004 at the earliest for a realistic Stanley Cup run. Getting a top goaltending prospect and first, second and thirds seems like a steal to me.

I thought Montreal also made a great deal, basically giving up nothing for a capable backup.

And Oates walks after the playoffs for PHI anyway. I doubt this deal happens if not for the injuries last night. I know draft picks aren't really that important in the NHL much like MLB, but WASH now has 3 1sts, 3 2nds, 2 3rds and I think 2 4ths, and a goalie that from what I understand is expected to be very good. At the very least they have tons of trade material. Nick, there was zero chance Oates was coming back after this year. Maybe it pays off with a Cup for Philly.

Sorry, my mistake. I had only heard on the radio the 3 draft picks.

Getting Ouellet is a bonus, he has alot of talent and has played well in the juniors.

As for the draft picks.
The Flyers I thought were in a corner and I think they could have at least gotten a player to help them right away. 2002 does not look very good for prospects from all accounts. Also with having Jagr and getting picks that will not help for 3-4 years down the road does not help this team at all.

Why have Jagr and build for the future, plus I don't think Wash has that great a track record in making picks in the draft under this regime.

I agree with SJ, Oates would be gone, I doubt he wants to play with Jagr, but I don't understand Washington's plan on building this team, no direction at all.

BTW How bad is St. Louis. 1/2 way through the 1st and 1 shot

Just went by what I picked up on the radio.

Didn't even know they had picked him up. I think he'll be great not only experience on the blue line but he'll be great at clearing the net for Chicago.

I've said before Smith has done a great job for Chicago, he's certainly continuing that. Now if they can get there scoring touch going, they could wear alot of teams out.

I don't know about it not helping at all, but I agree with you for the most part. Jagr is not getting any younger. I had read that most think this is not a great draft year. That is why I think they will dump some of their picks for players this summer, if possible. They will be a player for some UFA too I think.

This is true and the one thing that bothers me about the plethora of picks they have this year.

They were actually really starting to click and Oates wanted to stay rather than be rented for the playoffs. This was just an offer they could not refuse from what McPhee and Wilson have said. Philly was over a barrel somewhat.
