Reds manager Bryan Price has said Tony Cingrani and Anthony DeSclafani are the favorites for the fourth and fifth spots in the team's rotation in 2015.

Jason Marquis disagrees.

"It's my job to lose," said the 36-year-old veteran. "I'm not saying to discredit anyone in this room.? I can only control every movement I make, preparation, every pitch I can make, that's all I can control."

Marquis will at the very least get the first shot at making a good impression, starting the team's first spring training game, Tuesday against Cleveland. Marquis threw live batting practice on Wednesday, displaying the hard sinker that has helped him pitch in parts of 14 big-league seasons.

Marquis hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2013, when he was in San Diego. In July, Marquis tore his ulnar collateral ligament and had to undergo Tommy John surgery. He had a tryout for the Reds last spring, but was not signed. He ultimately signed with the Phillies, appearing in nine minor-league games.

Wearing seven different big-league uniforms over the years, Marquis has a career record of 121-114 with a 4.56 ERA. He was signed to a minor-league deal with the Reds last month to compete for a spot in the rotation. Marquis said he had several offers, but he decided to sign with the Reds because he liked the opportunity, the team and he'd played for Reds general manager Walt Jocketty in St. Louis.

In 2003, Jocketty acquired Marquis, Adam Wainwright and Ray King in a trade that sent J.D. Drew and Eli Marrero, who is now the manager of the Reds' Class A-Advanced affiliate, the Daytona Cubs. Marquis played three years in St. Louis before signing with the Cubs. Chicago traded him to Colorado in 2009, and then he signed with the Nationals as a free agent for 2010. In 2011, the Nationals traded him to Arizona, and then he signed with the Twins before the 2012 season. The Twins released him after seven starts, before he signed with the Padres, where he pitched the rest of 2012 - and in 2013 before he needed Tommy John surgery.

In short, he's a survivor.

"I didn't come into this to play the game for money, I came in to play the game because I still love it, I still want to compete," Marquis said this week. "I didn't want to end on an injury, my family still wants me to play. I'm excited about the opportunity."

Marquis' baseball career started when the Braves took him in the first round of the 1996 draft. His experience with the Braves has shaped his career. As a young prospect in Atlanta, Marquis got to pitch alongside three future Hall of Fame pitchers ? Greg Maddux, John Smoltz and Tom Glavine.

"Back then, it was a little different. As a young guy, you kept your mouth shut and your eyes and ears open," Marquis said. "You learned a lot from those guys and if you were lucky enough, the took you under their wing and showed you how to act, not just on the field but off."
