Hmm...actually as I reread my own post, I see that this artice on the website is from yesterday the 4th.
So, maybe this newspaper article is correct (the reporter's phone number is posted, maybe I can call him up and ask! :
Canes undecided on No. 1 goalie
'Who's the starter?' still an issue
By LUKE DE****, Staff Writer
MONTREAL - Come March, there's usually one thing about the Carolina Hurricanes that is beyond argument, without question and reliably consistent.
Arturs Irbe will be in net for the last month of the season.
This March, that's anything but settled. The No. 1 goaltender job, up for grabs between Irbe and Tom Barrasso all season, remains very much open as the season enters its final month.
Irbe has started all three of Carolina's games since the Olympic break as the Canes give him a chance to secure the No. 1 spot, but whether that audition will continue is known only to one man.
In the moments after Carolina's 4-3 win over Montreal on Saturday, Canes coach Paul Maurice went from all but anointing Tom Barrasso as the starter for Tuesday's game in Chicago to all but guaranteeing Irbe another game in net.
"I'm going to think long and hard about Tommy playing in Chicago," Maurice said. "He's working very hard right now, and he looks really good in practice. While Archie has played well and winning is the key, at the same time we've got another guy that's very capable, as well."
It isn't an easy decision. Irbe was solid in a 6-2 win over Boston on Thursday, making a handful of critical saves in the first period as the Canes jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but in the other two games since the Olympic break he has been primarily responsible for the Canes falling behind early.
Saturday, they were able to fight back from two goals down and win 4-3. Tuesday in Toronto, they collapsed and lost 4-1.
Irbe, who gave up three goals on the first 12 shots he faced to put the Canes down 3-1 early in the third period in Montreal, admitted the win was "not the prettiest" from his perspective.
"Boys helped me achieve it, because you cannot do it on your own," Irbe said. "You always need help."
Barrasso can now make a convincing argument that he should play Tuesday in Chicago and perhaps Thursday in Pittsburgh, as well, as he gets a similar chance to show he's the man for the job.
But it isn't cut and dried that Barrasso's turn has arrived. It'll be tough to take Irbe out of net, maybe too tough, after the Canes have won two of three since the Olympic break and played well in all of them with Irbe, however shaky, in net.
Moments after Maurice seemed to be leaning toward giving Barrasso a chance, he swung back the other way. He's clearly of two minds on this one.
"We're going to take a few days and look through it, but the deciding factor in that is we just played three really solid games and won two," Maurice said. "Why would you change anything?"
If he's undecided now, he could have even more to think about in two weeks.
If neither Barrasso nor Irbe distinguishes himself before the March 19 trade deadline, there could be a third goalie in the mix.
The NHL's general managers are meeting in Naples, Fla., until Wednesday, and much of the groundwork for deadline deals will be laid this week.
While Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford is evaluating the trade market for a first-line left wing and help on defense, it is believed the Canes have offered Shane Willis to the Tampa Bay Lightning for 26-year-old goalie Kevin Weekes and inquired about the availability of Montreal backup Jeff Hackett should Irbe and Barrasso falter.
It may not be necessary. Both are capable of carrying the Canes into the playoffs. But as Maurice's back-and-forth comments made clear, the Canes are committing to neither.
