GAME NOTES: Trying to put together back-to-back wins for the first time in
2002-03, the Ohio University Bobcats take the floor tonight after a week off
to challenge the Bowling Green Falcons in a Mid-American Conference contest
at the Convocation Center in Athens. Last Tuesday, the Bobcats posted a 72-66
win over the Buffalo Bulls in league action, putting an end to the squad's
three-game losing skid. At the moment Ohio is fourth in the East Division of
the MAC with a record of 2-4 against the rest of the league and has an
overall record of only 5-9 as they have played the fewest games of any
school in the MAC. As for the Falcons, they are third in the West Division
with a record of 5-3 and could close the gap with Central Michigan and
Northern Illinois, which have 5-2 marks prior to tonight's action.
Unfortunately, Bowling Green contributed to the Huskies' rise in the
standings as the Falcons fell to Northern Illinois on Saturday by a final of
63-46, the second straight defeat for Bowling Green and the third in the
last four outings overall. Bowling Green comes into this contest holding a
60-58 advantage over the Bobcats in the overall series between the two
squads on the hardwood. However, the last meeting was an 85-78 decision in
favor of Ohio last season, breaking a three-game win streak by the Falcons.
Bowling Green used just two players off the bench as it was easily handled
by the Northern Illinois Huskies in league play on Saturday, 63-46. Those
two reserves, Ron Lewis and Cory Ryan, did contribute a combined nine points
and eight rebounds, but the negatives of their performances far outweighed
the positives, as they shot only 2-of-11 from the field and were guilty of
nine turnovers. John Reimold continues to be one of the more reliable
offensive threats for the unit, posting a team-high 18 points, followed by
Kevin Netter as the only other player on the roster to score in double
figures with 11 on the day. Netter, a 54.4 percent field goal shooter
through 16 games, leads the squad in scoring thus far with an average of
15.8 ppg, but Reimold is close behind with his 15.6 ppg as well. Reimold has
been deadly from the perimeter, knocking down 46.6 percent of his attempts
behind the three-point line, and when he decides to come inside, he has done
so rather easily and leads the team in rebounding with nearly five boards
per contest.
Brandon Hunter registered yet another double-double as he posted a
season-high 32 points and added 11 rebounds in leading the Bobcats to a
72-66 victory over Buffalo a week ago at Alumni Arena. Nearly posting a
double-double of his own was Steve Esterkamp, who tallied 13 points and
grabbed nine boards, while Sonny Johnson supplied 19 points and five
rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench for the squad. Defensively, Ohio limited
the Bulls to 37.3 percent shooting from the field on the night and just
5-of-23 behind the three-point line. Despite the efforts of Hunter and
Esterkamp, the team still lost the battle on the boards, 43-38, and also
hurt itself by shooting just 16-of-29 at the free-throw line. Hunter
continues to be one of the most devastating players in the MAC, averaging
20.6 points and 13 rebounds per game, making him one of the top players on
the glass in the entire country. He has been such a leader on the boards for
the unit, the next three best rebounders combined still don't have as many
as he does after 14 games. At the defensive end of the floor he has recorded
20 blocked shots, more than half the team's total. Helping him in the
scoring department are Johnson and Esterkamp with 15.6 and 11.7 ppg,
respectively.
Bowling Green has a lot to play for in this game, especially after giving
way to Northern Illinois which it is now chasing. Ohio has some very
talented players and there's no denying that Hunter should certainly get
some votes, if not all of them, for Player of the Year in the MAC. However,
without ample support, specifically from the reserves, this is going to be
another tough test for the Bobcats.
