Texas Tech over 6.5 wins 7 units
Maxing out my Tech over. I have a ton of thoughts on this season for Tech and it starts with the QB. Seth Doege had a decent year for Tech last year. I think there was some arm fatigue(the guy hadn't played since his sophmore year in high school), his top 3 RBs all went down or out and his top WR to start the season was hurt a few games into the year and never was the same. He has more weapons than he needs around him. Moore(WR) is back and healthy as is Torres(acl) but the big addition is Sophmore TE Jace Amaro. This kid was the #1 TE recruit in the country two years ago. Last year he had a so so frosh year but has put on some serious weight(over 260 at this point and still fluid) and from all reports is looking like the stud he was suppose to be coming out of high school. Both RBs that had injuries last year are around 90-95% and should be close to 100% by the time the season starts. The season for Tech really turned to the bad when Stephens went down. He's a great runner and even better pass blocker. The offensive line has some solid kids and should be far better than last year led by left tackle Waddle who is a stud and should shut the left side pass rush down.
The defense is already night and day different just in practices. Tubs brought in his old crew of coaches and the players are said to be loving them. For once coaches are working on tackling. I know it sounds crazy but it's something they've concentrated on. The defense is deeper and has more speed that at any point since before the Leach era. The big addition and a guy that should make some noise is Juco LB Will Smith.
They have also added several DBs from the juco ranks in hopes that one or two of them can play. So far the early reports are that the guys are athletic but raw. Tech just needs one of them to to do well. #1 cb Douglas moved from WR last year and did well right away. With a full season and off season under his belt he should be very good.
Tech starts out with three easy games which should help all of the new guys get acclimated to the team and coaches. They follow that up with a bye and then they play at Iowa State. Iowa State has given Tech problems the past few years so it's a big game for this bet. I think Tech goes in and rolls Iowa State and puts this bet over. If they lose that game then I'll more than likely lose this bet.
I've been watching Tech since I can remember and I don't remember them ever having this much talent nor being this deep at key positions. Their offense will be top 10 and their defense can do what Tubs is good at doing then they're going to have a great season.
A&M bet is simply because I don't think they have the talent. The SEC is going to take its toll on the team. And IMO I don't think Sumlin was the right guy for the job. Their team will be shades of UK when Mummy and Leach where there. Good offense but not enough D or any for that matter. I'm not even sure their offense will be good because of who the lost and the youth they have.
