At the University at Buffalo, a season that seemed to have a smidgen of championship potential has been rendered a disappointment. At Ball State, modest expectations have been subverted.

Two programs experiencing frustrating seasons will play at 6 p.m. tonight at UB Stadium in a game that lacks much of the sizzle of the last time they met.

Tonight's game is a rematch of the 2008 Mid-American Conference Championship Game at Ford Field in Detroit where the heavily favored 12th-ranked Cardinals entered the game with a perfect 12-0 record. UB, which was already invited to the International Bowl, upset Ball State, 42-24, for its first league championship.

Since then, both schools have struggled to win. The Bulls (2-7, 1-4) are 7-14 since that season and have lost four in a row, including last week's 34-17 setback at Ohio University. Ball State (3-7, 2-4) is 5-17 and opened the 2009 season at 0-7 but ended a four-game losing streak last week against winless Akron, 37-30, in double overtime.

"The MAC is an up and down conference, it's the kind of conference where competition is equal year in and year out," said senior Kyle Brey, who started the MAC title game at tight end. "But I think we're getting back on track to where we need to be with coach [Jeff] Quinn and this offensive and defensive staff. I think we've got a leg up on [Ball State] and there's a lot of room for improvement."

While tonight's game isn't a high-stakes affair, both programs have tried to maintain a positive outlook on seasons that soured to varying degrees.

Quinn said his team has "no margin for error." Ball State coach Stan Parrish said his group has been a "high-energy team" considering its struggles this season.

The Bulls hit a few low points -- back-to-back blowout losses to Northern Illinois and Temple, falling to Miami (Ohio) at home and on the road to Ohio -- all of which have epitomized their season of misery.

"We need to get this thing going on track, we need a win, we need to get everyone moving in the right direction," said Brey, who grew up in Indiana and is the son of Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey. "I think Coach [Quinn] has done an unbelievable job of making sure the message throughout this season, regardless of circumstance, has been clear and consistent."

It's definitely hot and heavy for Parrish at Ball State. He's won championships as an assistant at Michigan and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but his teams haven't performed well at the FBS level. When Parrish coached at Kansas State in the mid-80s, he was 2-30-1. At Ball State, the fans' patience is wearing thin, but Parrish is unfazed.

"The good news is the fans are not part of our preparation everyday," Parrish said. "Of course [fans] are not happy, fans aren't happy anywhere and a lot of times they're not happy when you are winning. That goes with the turf."

The Cardinals lost to FCS Liberty, 27-23, in their second game of the season and lost to Eastern Michigan, 41-38, in overtime on Oct. 16, ending the Eagles' 18-game losing streak.

"Our game is about results and we've let a couple of games get away from us that we've had the opportunity to win," Parrish said. "We've gone through some tremendously tough struggles staying somewhat healthy this season and trying to develop some new players but through it all we've had a high-character team and high-energy team. [But] I'm not happy with our record right now so I join the fans with not being happy with it."

After the Ohio game, Quinn huddled with his coaching staff before heading into the locker room to talk with the players. The loss guaranteed a losing season for the Bulls, and Quinn felt the staff needed a pep talk.

"I told them I know they're disappointed because we work 80 hours a week in order to get our kids ready," he said. "It's always tough when you lose these games."

UB's talented defense has chance to make statement

1. Youth is Served

Game pits two true freshmen QBs from the football-rich state of Ohio. Alex Zordich took over as starter for UB seven games into the season, and Keith Wenning became the man for Ball State beginning with Game Three. Wenning's completed just over 52 percent of his passes for 1,175 yards and 13 TDs against 14 INTs. Zordich is at 42 percent for 411 yards and one TD although his numbers have been on the upswing. He had at least two TD passes dropped in last week's loss at Ohio. Wenning is less of a running threat (25 attempts, 70 yards) while Zordich's legs have added a dimension to UB's offense and given the Bulls some recourse for an offensive line that's struggled to open running room all season.

2. Backed up

MiQuale Lewis was a dynamic force at RB on the '08 Ball State team that rose to 12th in the national rankings before UB knocked it off in the MAC Championship Game. He's a senior now and finding the going tough. The Cardinals, like UB, have been hit by injuries on the offensive line, and Lewis is averaging just 3.5 yards per attempt, having amassed 397 yards on 114 carries. Ball State also utilizes soph. RB Eric Williams, who leads the team in running (441 yards) despite having carried 27 fewer times than Lewis. But he has been slowed of late by an ankle injury. Williams has three TDs on the ground, two on receptions and ranks first in the MAC and fifth in the nation in kick return average (29.6). He took one 92 yards to the house against Eastern Michigan in the seventh game of the season.

3. Reputation Builder

Doubtless UB's defensive numbers have been hurt by the offense's inability to put together substantial, time-consuming drives. Bulls haven't won time of possession since Bowling Green win and have been under 25 minutes in three of last four games. Forget all that. This is an opportunity for a talented UB defense to dictate the outcome against a Ball State team striving to carve out an identity. DE Steven Means had big game against Ohio, fr. LB Khalil Mack continues to dominate, sr. S/CB Domonic Cook leads MAC in INTs and sr. S Davonte Shannon remains the pre-eminent run stopper among backfield players in the conference. Look for Bulls to overplay ground game and challenge Wenning to confront experienced secondary.

4. Catching Up

UB receivers failed to distinguish themselves against Ohio, dropping several passes, including at last two that should have been TDs. Jr. WR Marcus Rivers has slipped into background the last three games (six catches, 85 yards) after robust start to season and fr. WR Alex Neutz has been a non-factor of late as well. Only jr. WR Terrell Jackson has shown any consistency (16-143 in last three games). Midseason QB switch and Zordich's on-the-job training have hampered pass game to a degree. But wideouts have to beat coverage off line and do a better job of catching what's thrown their way. Zordich has to keep tabs on Cardinals Jr. S Sean Baker, who is second on team in tackles and is tied for fourth in MAC with four INTs. Ball State runs out of 4-3 base.

5. Extra Points

First meeting between schools since UB forced five turnovers (two returned for TDs) and scored a 42-24 victory in 2008 MAC Championship Game in Detroit. ... UB hurting at LB, with sophomore Jaleel Verser and Dalonte Wallace day-to-day. Also uncertain for tonight are OL Jasen Carlson, DL Gordon DuBois, TE Aaron Connacher. ... Ball State coach Stan Parrish (5-17) in second year with program. ... Cards coming off 37-30 2OT victory over winless Akron. ... Bulls' Shannon set career mark for solo tackles in Ohio game (238). ... Cards' Ian McGarvey 12 of 15 on FG attempts and has made last seven.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH: Ball State football vs. Buffalo

1. QBs of the future

Tonight's game will feature two young quarterbacks with promising futures in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State's Keith Wenning has shown more of his big-play ability recently with 10 touchdown passes in the past four games. He's also displayed his inexperience by tossing three interceptions in each of the past three games. Buffalo QB Alex Zordich is the first true freshman to start for the Bulls since Drew Willy, who was on the Colts' practice squad most of last season, in 2005. In two games as a starter, Zordich had 392 passing yards and 120 rushing yards.

2. Control the blitz

Buffalo has played reasonably well on defense most of the season, and its success (fourth in the MAC in total defense) has been helped by an aggressive blitz package. The Bulls blitz on nearly every play, and that will be a tactic they'll try to use to fluster Wenning and force him to throw before he's ready.

3. Run defense important

Ball State hasn't done a good job against the run this season. Buffalo has struggled to be consistent on offense, but one of the things it has had success doing is running the ball. The Bulls produced 136 yards on the ground against nationally ranked UCF, and they recently piled up 200 against Bowling Green. Ball State's game plan will include a heavy dose of trying to stop the run so it can put pressure on Zordich to perform with the pass.

4. Don't get Cook-ed

Ball State has to be able to control Buffalo senior strong safety Domonic Cook, who has forced a turnover in five consecutive games (tied for the longest streak in the nation). Cook has helped account for nine of the Bulls' 21 turnovers forced this season (six interceptions, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble that resulted in a teammate recovering the ball). His six picks are tied for second in the nation.

5. The skinny

This the first time the teams have met since Buffalo shocked Ball State 42-24 in the 2008 MAC championship game. But this is no rematch of that game. The head coaches of those two teams are long gone, the players are different and this is a totally dissimilar situation. The teams in tonight's game are simply trying to find something positive to point to while plodding through seasons that have been a struggle. Home field likely means something in this game.
