For the third day in a row, coach Randy Shannon said Kyle Wright made progress during practice after his ankle and knee injury. And for the third day in a row, Shannon didn't have an answer as to who will start at quarterback Saturday against N.C. State.

''If [Wright] can go he can go, if he can't he can't,'' Shannon said. ``At least you got Kirby [ Freeman] oiled up a lot. . .

``Kyle felt better today though. Not as sore as he was before. Everyday its getting better though. Today we did some sprint out stuff with him, some boot legs, getting him out of the pocket on the edges to see how he responded. And he did. After that we backed off and let him rest. We just got to see what he can do.''

If Freeman starts Shannon said there is a chance Wright would be available to back up. Shannon said the third-string quarterback is walk-on Jorge Fernandez.

? Shannon said receiver Lance Leggett and defensive tackle Antonio Dixon, two players who missed the Florida State game with injuries, have done enough in practice to play this week.

''He really impressed me -- caught all the balls that went to him and didn't drop any that I've seen,'' Shannon said. ``He'll be in the rotation this week.''

The surprise is Dixon, who was once thought to be lost for the season. Shannon said Dixon likely will play about 30 plays.

? Shannon said safety Lovon Ponder (undisclosed injury) will not play this week.
