Walter the BEST, as a Lion's fan we knew him well. But I have to say Barry was one step behind him.

Barry had it all and could easily have eclipsed Walter's record. The fact that days after his retirement, when he was asked why he didn't stay to get the record, he stated that it was never important to him and he didn't want to take away from Walter's legacy, speaks huge volumes to his character. Barry had more pure talent than any back ever. I still think Walter was the best football player to ever play the game, Barry may have been the best running back though. He couldn't throw the ball like Walter and didn't block quite as well as Walter, which is why I say Walter is the best football player.

Such an upright, fast runner. He looks like Usain Bolt on those long runs.

It's also nice to reminisce on guys who actually used to run into instead of dance into the endzone!

I'm not a big fan but IMO it's hard to argue against AP after the season he had last year. I'm almost 100% positive it was the most impressive season by a RB when you add to it the QB he had was absolutely horrible.

I loved watching Barry more than any other football player ever but I actually think he had a big negative. He liked to dance so much that many times he lost yardage. In the NFL you can't lose yards on any play because it pretty much kills the drive.

Barry could stop and a dime and turn full speed before a defender knew what happened. He'd do it several times on the same play, too. I've never seen another player, before or since, compare to that.

The best cutter I've ever seen. In my opinion, he was better than Jimmy Brown.

Sorry to disagree with you my friend, but not only was Jimmy Brown the greatest running back of all time, he is the greatest football player of all time....

www.nfl.com is doing a Hall of Fame 50th anniversary team & this is what NFL Media historian Elliot Harrison wrote about Brown....

"Brown is the best football player ever to lace 'em up. Fans get tired of hearing that, thinking Brown played too long ago. But when someone leads the NFL in rushing during eight of his nine years in the league, is named Rookie of the Year, nabs three NFL MVPs, earns a Pro Bowl nod every season, wins an NFL championship and is considered the top player in pro football in his last season ... well, folks, you have the greatest player in league history. His career average of 5.22 yards per carry is the highest among players with at least 1,000 carries. Brown is the only player to average more than 100 rushing yards per game for his career."....

By no means is this guy's opinion law & I do disagree with some of his other opinions, but not on Brown....

If you guys have some time, you should read about the other choices, it is pretty interesting imo....

Gayle Sayers....

Close, but I disagree. (He was fun to watch, though!)

when i first saw this i thought that my man zoomer was invoking his inner-jerry springer.....

but it`s a great topic...no denying juice was one of thee very best...

sayers had some of the most mind boggling runs i`ve ever seen....and sanders was a freak...

but for sheer destruction,i`m with earl campbell....he put that team on his back when everybody knew he was getting the ball(very similar to sanders in that respect...and juice)...earl`s slickness and shftiness were kind of drowned out by his utter power...

Campbell for sure and Larry Csonka were true smash mouth backs. Jimmy Brown was a punisher and loved to run through people. I felt OJ was a more complete back. He could finesse, play smash mouth, return kicks and had the gift of breakaway speed. Hard to say who was really best but to bolster Al's argument, Brown played on a winner. The others, eh..not so much. Don't know if you were aware but Brown was a phenomenal basketball and lacrosse player at Manhasset.

I should qualify this as Payton has a ring but most of his Bears teams did not go deep in playoffs.

Well said. But no Barry did not throw the football.

He just carried the rock. If he would have kept playing would have broke all records which would have squashed most arguments of who was the best of all time. But he didn't so....
Walter was a great one!
