Injury problems continue for Pittsburgh's pitching staff
Bradenton, FL (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates learned Wednesday that Francisco Cordova could be sidelined with elbow problems. Cordova joins Kris Benson and Jason Schmidt as projected starters who are injured.
Cordova's throwing elbow began hurting again after giving up five runs in the first inning of an 11-6 setback against Philadelphia Wednesday. He had practically no movement on his pitches and his velocity was weak.
Following Wednesday's contest, Cordova received a cortisone injection from a team doctor. He will have x-rays Thursday morning. If the elbow doesn't respond in another week or so, Cordova will probably need another season-ending operation.
Cordova was limited to 17 starts last season, before undergoing right elbow surgery in August.
Meanwhile, Benson was scratched from his next start because of elbow soreness. Schmidt, coming off rotator cuff surgery, has a cartilage injury and likely won't be ready for opening day.
the mets faithful have alot to be thankful for. they're loaded with newly acquired talent and they get a chance to open the 2002 campaign at home against one of the nl's premiere creampuffs. the pittsburgh road losses last year were appalling -$2360 and they've done nothing to improve over the off season.
