U.S. face another hostile crowd for Germany game

ULSAN, South Korea (Reuters) - As if playing three time world champions Germany was not hard enough, the United States face the added disadvantage of a hostile crowd in their World Cup quarter-finals clash in Ulsan.

Although only a few hundred German supporters are expected at the game, tens of thousands of South Koreans are likely to vent their latent resentment of the world's only superpower by backing the Europeans.

"I will definitely cheer for Germany," said Chung Hyun-hwa, 28, a sales manager from Ulsan who will be in the crowd in the 44,466-seater World Cup stadium on Friday.

"Firstly, I think Germany are one of the greatest teams in the world, but I think it is also natural for Korean people not to support the United States," she said. "There is still some bad feeling between us."

That will be nothing new for the Americans who have been booed on the pitch in most of their games in South Korea, which is home to 37,000 U.S. troops.

So far, it has had little effect on their game. After all, they were the only team to take a goal off the South Koreans in group D, holding the co-hosts to a 1-1 draw in front of sea of red-clad local fans.

U.S. players have brushed aside the South Koreans' antipathy but the few hundred American fans who shout themselves hoarse at every match have expressed frustration at the constant barrage of boos which they see as undeserved and unsporting.

HOSTILITY ENDURES

It was only natural for locals not to support the United States in the first round when South Korea were vying with them for qualification for the last 16, they say.

But the hostility endured during the Americans' second round clash with Mexico, when thousands of South Koreans, some wearing Mexican strips and face paints, backed the South Americans.

For college student Ahn Sung-hun, 24, opposing the United States is a matter of principle.

"I'm concerned that America is a country that only thinks about its own well-being," said Ahn, who hopes to attend Friday's match to cheer on the Germans.

"Korea has been hurt a lot by the United States, financially, in sports events and in other ways."

High on his list of bones to pick is South Korean speedskater Kim Dong-sung's disqualification in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and the award of the gold medal instead to U.S. skater Apolo Anton Ohno.

South Korea's Ahn Jung-hwan recalled the incident when he celebrated his goal against the Americans in the first round with a mock speedskating routine.

"When I saw Ahn do his skating imitation I felt so happy," said the student.

Businessman Jung Youn-il said South Korean resentment over that incident and the U.S. military presence was exaggerated.

"That kind of feeling has diminished now," said Jung, 38, who already has his ticket for the U.S.-Germany game. "I used to feel like that but not any more."

But he too will back Germany, hoping South Korea can enjoy the honour of meeting them later in the competition.

"I'm not against America, I just hope the Korean national team can play against Germany because they are one of the best teams," he said. "I really hope Germany can reach the semi-finals."

kicker-editor Klemm analyses the USA
THE STRENGTH IS CALLED DEFENSE

kicker-editor Hans-G?nter Klemm watched the game of the German team vs the USA in Rostock. At the WC Klemm followed the US team. He analyses the development and improvement of the US boys: in March the Americans were an ordinary average team, no danger for the Germans, who could have won higher than 4-2. The USA in June at the WC: a surprise team that already annoyed the Portuguese and the Mexicans, and is a real danger for the V?ller-troop if they don?t take the nobody?s seriously.

A difference as day and night. Though the USA played in a top formation at the Baltic Sea, still with the now slightly injured keeper Keller, with Armas and with many who are now playing a main role. But team captrain Reyna was missing, a leading player and a key in directing, rhythm and speed variations.

What back then looked like beginners, unorganised and harmless, is now looking completely different. Head coach Arena formed a good organised and disciplined team. The strength evidently is the defence and the effective and dangerous counter attacks. As it was recognisable in the opening game against Portugal and partially against Mexico.

The defence presented itself secure, usually in a four men line, against Mexico with just three nominal defenders. Good is also the midfield where O?Brien in the defense and Beasley on the left wing might be the discoveries of the tournament. Both were missing in Rostock. In the offence McBride is more dangerous than the recently not nominated Mathis who didn?t convince so far. Outstanding was the young star Dononvan who is impersonating the change of the team. At the friendly the highly talented player of Leverkusen was one of many, at the WC he is the first among equals in a perfect working structure.

The former Bundesliga player on the USA
REYNA: "Our troop is intact"

I like this WC of surprises. The little nations closed the gap. The victory of South Korea vs Italy is giving us even more self-confidence. Everything is possible against Germany though we are evident outsiders. We don?t have world stars like Oliver Kahn, who is number one in the world since years. But we are having a very compact and physically strong team with a good goalie as Brad Friedel. Our troop is intact. We got some guiding figures as e.g. Eddie Pope, our defence boss, one of our toughest players.

It is good for us that some ? as me ? were playing in Germany. We?ll profit from that in this game. Impressing is mainly the fitness and the physical condition of the Germans. We?ll have to keep the pace regarding this. If we can do it, then we got a chance. We won?t play as defensive as against Mexico. We have to be aggressive and try to create some pressure. So far we already scored seven goals. Also against Olli Kahn we?ll get our chances.

WAITING FOR BALLACK?S IGNITION

The six days break until the USA game are mainly good for one man: Michael Ballack. More than two moths the star tortured himself, first with a foot injury, then with muscular problems. ?A World Cup is the highlight of any soccer career. There you ignore the pain?, says Ballack. Now he is completely without any pain. And now team boss Rudi V?ller hopes ?that Balla really starts?. On Friday.

Discussions about Ballack, who assisted four of the five Klose-goals, were being stopped by V?ller immediately. ?Also if he isn?t the Ballack we know, he is a very important figure. He?s got abilities we can?t do without. He is fantastic, how he played for the team despite of his injuries?. No discussions about Ballack also by his future employer. Despite ?Kalle? Rummenigge, Bayern official and DFB member in Korea, only stressed two players: ?Kahn and Klose, in between many good players who are forming a team?. But also Rummenigge knows that Ballack?s hour might come at this WC ? in the quarter final and hopefully later on as well.

What also wouldn?t be without meaning for Thomas Linke. If Germany becomes World Champion, then he?ll withdraw from his announcement two weeks ago and continue playing for Germany until 2004. And also Marco Bode, who announced his retirement from the national team simultaneously with his retirement from the Bundesliga, is thinking about it after strong performance before and during the WC. On Wednesday he said: ?I?ve got offers. But now I am competing at the WC, everything else has got time until I return to Germany?.

INTERVIEW WITH JENS JEREMIES
"WHY SHOULD I MAKE TROUBLE FOR ONE WEEK?"

k: Mr Jeremies, how satisfied are you with your personal WC?
J: Surely, I would have loved to see more playing time, but we are a team. It doesn?t matter who is playing

k: Are you playing against the USA?
J: No idea

k: Did you play into center of attraction in the Paraguay game?
J: It was okay in the defence, but all in all nothing overwhelming, nothing sensational. I need two, three games to get back into rhythm. Deciding is that we?ve won.

kicker: So, you are satisfied with your part time job?
J: Surely I want to play. But the coach deciding on others.

k: Do you know why?
J: Yes, we were talking about it.

k: What did V?ller say?
J: That?s only a thing for V?ller and me. And it is uninteresting. I am confident and relaxed.

k: Where did you take the new calmness?
J: Maybe because my career almost was over after my knee injury. Or because I saw Markus Babbel in his wheel chair and recognised how fast such things can go.

k: Are you a victim of the tactics because of the many defensive midfielders?
J: It doesn?t matter whether I am a victim of the tactics or whether the coach says that I am too blind or whether he doesn?t like my hair cut. But if not, then I am sitting on the bench with the Germany flag and cross my fingers, that?s it. Why should I make trouble for one week? There is no reason to make theatre right now. I?ve only got one aim: I want to become World Champion. We all knew, we could only reach something at the WC, if all 23 stick together. We are a team.

k: Before the WC you called yourself a certain part of the team. Do you still see it that way?
J: Absolutely. My opinion counts, for the coach and for the team.

k: What is your opinion for the USA game?
J: I am confident that we reach the semifinal.

k: Germany is the favourite against the USA.
J: Germany is always the favourite for me. Only the first rank counts, not the second.

k: Since weeks you are talking about the title. Where do you take the self-confidence?
J: Because we got the team spirit and extraordinary players: Ballack, Schneider, Kahn, partially Klose and Metzelder. This all is giving me the confidence to make it to the final.

k: Is the team good enough for that?
J: Before the WC we were told to be a troop of fully blind ones, so the quarter final is a sensation; for others we now are the super team ? what is up now? The people are talking too much nonsense. 97% of the experts don?t have a clue.

k: Who?ll be Germany?s opponent in the final?
J: No idea, we are still two steps away from it.

k: You said that you?d quit your national team career if winning the title. Is this still valid?
J: I think so, cause then I reached the highest aim. But that?s hypothetical.

k: And if it doesn?t happen ? do you continue?
J: I really can?t answer that question at the moment.

INTERVIEW OF THE WEEK: DFB TEAM BOSS RUDI V?LLER

k: Mr V?ller, what makes you certain that Germany reaches the semi final tomorrow?
V: We are in a good physical condition. We got the necessary self-confidence and the will to take part until the end of the WC.

k: Do you worry that the USA ? considering that it?s a WC quarter final ? is seen as a no-name troop?
V: It?s a special thing at this WC that several teams are in the quarter finals, which weren?t expected. The USA is belonging to them, partially also we do, Senegal, South Korea or Turkey. We have to get rid off the thought that it is a certainty for some countries to reach the quarterfinals.

K: After the Paraguay game you got the choice on several positions. Mainly in the central defense. Kehl is standing for a better game opening, Ramelow for a tactically stronger security. Who are you deciding for?
V: Let?s see whether Metzelder will be available. Clear is that we have to determine the game from the beginning on. Against Paraguay and Cameroon we started too passive. We?ve got to open the game better and get more offensive. Let?s see what personal solution we?ll find.

K: Is the current situation comparable with 1986 when quite unknown opponents like Morocco and Mexico were on the way to the finals?
V: The way is maybe similar. But this time we made the group games more secure. Against top teams like Cameroon and Ireland. The group victory is almost more difficult than now the quarter final.

K: You?re excluding the third consecutive knockout in the quarterfinal after 94 and 98. What happens if it happens?
V: It would be a disappointment as we don?t have the feeling to have reached the aim. But it would be no reason to question basics and structures. For that too much has happened within the last years.

K: How do you explain the WC fever in Germany despite of the hardly convincing games of the team?
V: With the phenomenon WC and national team. Paraguay was no highlight. But how we made it with ten against Cameroon was the breakthrough at home. I believe, the fan recognises the team spirit which is characteristic for the team.

k: Who is the most positive surprise in your team?
V: Of course Miro Klose. Also great how Christoph Metzelder made his way. He has everything a defender needs: speed, heading abilities, can play with both feet. We need more players like him in Germany. And I am especially happy for Thomas Linke and the way he is presenting himself.

K: And in the other nations?
V: It is very important that Ronaldo found back to old strength. Such a player belongs to the world stage of soccer.

K: Your personal conclusion as team boss. Do the experiences confess your conclusion to make two further big tournaments until 2006?
V: It is already art to get along with 23 different characters over a period of five to six weeks. As player you are only responsible for your own problems. To be responsible for the whole thing is a difficult task.

K: That you are going to repeat?
V: I assume that as I am having the power and the will to go on and fulfil my contract until 2006.

K: What advise did Franz Beckenbauer give to you?
V: Before the WC he told me that he made the mistake in 1986 to have cared too much about minor incidents. I accepted the hint to care for the essential things. Often it worked, unfortunately not always.

K: E.g. when you recently reacted to critcism on your team?
V: It was a mistake to attack Bum-Kun Cha like that. I?m sorry for that. But for Thomas Berthold I don?t have any understanding.

K: Does your friendship to Berthold suffer under that?.
V: This has nothing to do with that. It?s not good that he as former national player is saying such things. I have to keep the store together and protect us. If somebody like Berthold says such things, then I just respond. Regardless whether we shared a room in earlier times ? I can?t accept that.

THE ARENA-SHOW STARTS

His smile has a background. It is rushing over his face quite often when he is stating his comments. Mainly if he responds to dumb questions of US reporters who don?t understand the game. Then Bruce Arena underlines his sometimes biting and ironical remarks with a revealing smile.

As yesterday in the crowded press room of the Marriott-Hotel in the South Korean capital Seoul. With a little delay the American coach appears. Then the Arena-Show starts. Somebody says, Germany is 80-20 favourite. Arena?s answers: ?That sounds logical?. Then this broad smile that supports the outsider rule. ?If we loose, we?ll drive home and are happy?. Short break. ?I don?t think that it would be the same for the Germans.?

Arena likes jokes, tells that he usually has to important basketball players of the LA Lakers to equalise the physical dominant Germans. And he gives an insight in his philosophy. The 50 year old, praised for his charisma, criticised for his arrogance, is speaking about the thought of the game: ?It is a business in which the result counts. It?s not about entertaining people.?

He always wants to win, this winner type who is known as big strategist. His line-ups are a secret. Never the same eleven, changes are the only thing to rely on, also in the game against the ?Big Germans?. His two options there: security soccer as against neighbour country Mexico or the little more offensive surprise tactics as against Portugal.

Arena smiles when being asked whether Clint Mathis, who scored twice in the friendly, is going to play. And refuses the answer. Arena is doing a puzzle. The solution can just be guessed. Though he often has problems with the 26 year old Mathis, he is probably going to play. In any case Bayer Leverkusen?s Frankie Hejduk and shooting star DaMarcus Beasley will enrich the counter attack game with their speed. But is allrounder Pablo Mastroeni being preferred to Gregg Berhalter? Are this your thoughts, Mr Arena? The US coach doesn?t answer this questions and is just winking with his eyes.

ONLY WINNING IS NOT ENOUGH FOR V?LLER THIS TIME

Round of the last eight at the WC. Germany vs the USA this Friday in Ulsan. There the German team as three times champion is on a cross road: either reaching the semi finals for the 10th time at a WC or flying home in the quarter finals for the third consecutive time. Semi-final or negative hattrick?

The mood in Germany doesn?t allow doubts concerning this question. Optimism pure is existing among the kicker-online users of those more than 80% are satisfied with the V?ller troop. Kicker is naming four reasons why the semi-final can be reached:

Real fight for the open spots: Before and mainly after the second round against Paraguay the battle for the spots in the starting line-up started anew. Because the alternatives recommended their nomination with good performances. Mainly Oliver Neuville as forward and Sebastian Kehl as boss in the defense. The three suspended players are also available again. Dietmar Hamann has his spot in the line-up secure. How does V?ller plan with Christian Ziege and Carsten Ramelow? The team boss says: ?Against the USA we?ll have to start like in the second halves against Cameroon and Paraguay?. This is speaking against Ramelow who wasn?t on the pitch in both games at this point. V?ller also says: ?We don?t only want to win, but we want to show good soccer.? This is a clear statement pro Kehl, who was much more effective against Paraguay mainly when opening the game.

Will the team boss be brave and follow with a risky line-up? Or will he take the secure option with Ramelow? Or is nobody of the two playing in a four men defence chain?

This mainly depends on Christoph Metzelder?s injury. The defender starting training on Tuesday. Michael Skibbe: ?Everyone can play?.

2. Acceptable role to be the favourites: "We?ve got an aim, the WC title. With every game we?re getting closer?, says Hamann. The experiences of the past taught the team how to handle the role of the favourite. Oliver Bierhoff is linking to the club games: ?All our WC players are used to be the favourites in league and European games?.

Oliver Kahn sees good possibilities to reach the final. The captain is just warning to not loose the concentration by already thinking about the next round. ?We have to be very careful. The situation is as in 1994 and 1998 when everything also seemed to be easy.? Back then the team was dreaming of semi-finals against Italy (94) and France (98) and lost in the quarter finals against Bulgaria and Croatia. Thomas Linke remembers: ?It was the same situation like now. Everybody was thinking about higher goals and we had to face the hard reality.?

3. Right way of playing: the boss, Rudi V?ller, demands it; his partner Skibbe says it and the teams is shouting it: ?We know that we can and have to play better?. ?But the success is decisive?, stresses Hamann and recommends: ?We have to be secure in the defence. We may not get a goal against.? Jeremies stresses: ?We just got one goal against so far, and this in the stoppage time against Ireland.? The Bayern player even sees a positive development in the Paraguay game: ?We didn?t play good and won though not showing 100%. We are one step further now.?

4. Striking forwards: It is no secret that Klose is going to play. But who will play next to him? Everyone scored so far. Mainly the department offence cared for the group victory. Does V?ller want to win the air duels in the opponents box and lets Bierhoff play against Eddie Pope? Or is Jancker expected to roam the way for Klose? Or will the team boss try it with playing quality and the ball secure Neuville or Bode would be first choice. Kicker thinks: Attack, Rudi and let the turbo-duo Klose/Neuville score the way to the semi-final.
