USC MINUS 3 VS. LSU
01/06/04 - Stephen Nover
Well, so much for Oklahoma. But is LSU really the No. 1 team in college football?
Oddsmaker Keith Glantz doesn?t think so. He would make Southern Cal a three-point favorite against LSU if the teams were to meet on a neutral field.
?I think Southern Cal is the No. 1 team in the country,? said Glantz, a well-respected Las Vegas linesmaker and co-author of the syndicated Glantz-Culver betting line. ?Certainly, LSU is No. 2 after their performance against Oklahoma.
?But we found out the Big 12 was overrated when its two best teams got beat. Oklahoma lost to LSU, and Kansas State lost to Ohio State. And Ohio State wasn?t the best team in the Big Ten because Michigan was. And Michigan got beat up by Southern Cal. So it only stands to reason Southern Cal would have to be favored over LSU.?
Glantz didn?t think LSU was dominant early in the season, especially after the Tigers lost 19-7 to Florida on Oct. 11. But he took notice when the Tigers rolled past Georgia by 21 points to win the Southeastern Conference championship on Dec. 6.
?That surprised me,? Glantz said. ?I really didn?t think they would beat Georgia that badly. They surprised me again when they were the better team against Oklahoma.
?But Southern Cal is still the best team in the country. To get two-way action (on an LSU-USC game) the Trojans would have to be minus three.?
From a handicapping standpoint, instead of an oddsmaking viewpoint, Glantz would make the Trojans a little higher at minus 3 ? or four against the Tigers.
Glantz would rate Oklahoma No. 3, followed by Ohio State. Like just about everyone, Glantz is disgusted with the BCS format. He would like to see a 16-team playoff format instituted, with any deserving team eligible to win the national title. This past season, that list would have included Miami of Ohio.
?Miami of Ohio is definitely in the top 10,? Glantz said. ?They could have beaten some of these teams. They probably could give Ohio State all it could handle.?
