They celebrated and said they?ve moved on. Will those claims ring true?

Three days after the USD men?s basketball team?s cathartic 53-48 win over San Diego State at Petco Park, the Toreros (3-5) will play Denver in a nonconference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion and see if they can sustain the momentum from their first win over the Aztecs since 2005. Tipoff is 7 p.m. Wednesday.

On Monday after practice, head coach Lamont Smith and players said that, yes, beating a crosstown rival was invigorating, but emphasized that their focus was now on Denver (5-3).

The Pioneers, a member of the Summit League, play the complete opposite style of SDSU. They?re small, meticulous, and run the Princeton offense, which is based on precise timing and cuts. ?Couldn?t be two (more) polar opposite teams,? Smith said.

In other words, senior Duda Sanadze said, they?re more similar to the Toreros, whose offense is based on cutting and outside shooting.

One of the biggest questions is this: Which USD team will show up Wednesday? Will it be the team that slogged through a 15-point win over Bethesda University of California one week ago, prompting Smith to deliver a serious postgame message to his players? Or will it be the team that played with vigor and resolve on Sunday against the Aztecs?

The game against Bethesda, Sanadze said, was important, because it taught USD the importance of playing with purpose, regardless of opponent. And the win over SDSU, freshman guard Olin Carter III said, showed the Toreros how good they can really be, and how they need to prepare for every game.

Which brings us to Wednesday: Will those lessons carry on?
