TAMPA -- South Florida forward Greg Brittian was suspended indefinitely Wednesday for failure to fulfill team academic responsibilities. He was the third USF men's player suspended for academic reasons this season. The others were B.B. Waldon and Kelvin Brown.
Brittian, a junior, will be allowed to practice with the team but must show improvement on his academic obligations, coach Seth Greenberg said.
Brittian had six points, six rebounds and five assists in the first preseason game, an 86-61 win over Angola Select on Nov. 1. He will miss tonight's game at 8 against Saint Leo.
FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON: Center James Felton was suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of athletic department rules.
FRESNO STATE: Point guard Chris Sandy, expected to start, will be academically ineligible until the spring semester after the NCAA denied the school's appeal. The Bulldogs, picked to win the WAC in a recent media poll, will use converted shooting guard Travis DeManby and freshman Matt Mitchell at point guard until Sandy's return.
MURRAY STATE: Forward Jamar Avant was charged with sending two e-mailed bomb threats and was suspended from the team. He faces a felony charge for first-degree terroristic threats and could serve five to 10 years if convicted.
TEMPLE: Tonight's game against Florida will be the first game as a Hall of Famer for coach John Chaney. He was inducted last month and having a plaque in Springfield, Mass., hasn't changed him one bit. "We don't have a lot of quality players on our ballclub," he said in his usual self-deprecating manner. "We have Lynn Greer and Kevin Lyde but we'll be missing David Hawkins. We felt he was going to be a big help but he's ineligible the first semester. Last year (an Owls victory over UF in the NCAA Tournament), with us playing a lot of matchup zone, we found them shooting the ball a little bit poorly."
