VCU adjusting without Weber, with hobbled Graham

The VCU team that won 17 of its first 20 games and the 20th-ranked one that coach Shaka Smart is guiding into the stretch run of conference play have significant differences.

Point guard and defensive whiz Briante Weber is out for the season and awaiting knee surgery. And Treveon Graham?s run at the Rams? career scoring record has been upended by a high ankle sprain (doubtful tonight).

The Rams (18-5, 8-2 Atlantic 10) are tied for the conference lead with Rhode Island, but with Graham?s return uncertain, VCU may exercise caution now hoping to have a healthy Graham for a postseason run.

?The challenge for us ? is finding the time when it makes sense to bring him back,? Smart said, noting that he has consulted other coaches for advice.

In the offseason, Smart said, Graham?s injury would cause him to be shut down for 6-8 weeks, the generally proscribed time to allow it to heal.

?It?s hard with Tre because Tre?s such a tough kid. He just says, ?I can play,?? Smart said.

Graham has already tried that route.

The senior swingman, who is averaging 16.2 points, originally hurt his ankle in a victory at Rhode Island on Jan. 13. He sat out the next game, then played somewhat gingerly on the ankle for the next three games before aggravating it in the first half of a victory against George Mason on Feb. 4.

The Rams lost for the second time in three games on Saturday, 73-71 at Saint Bonaventure. They will look to get back on the winning track against La Salle (13-10, 5-5) on Wednesday night.

JeQuan Lewis, who has taken over starting point guard duties in Weber?s absence, has earned high praise from Smart through two games in that role. Lewis said it?s an opportunity for others to excel, too.

?It?s an opportunity for them to do what they know how to do,? he said. ?They?re all Division I athletes. It?s just a window for them. They just have to go with it. Don?t stress about it. Just play.?

Going forward, there may be adjustments in how Smart wants them to do that.

Weber was on pace to break the NCAA career steals record when he got hurt on Jan. 31, and it?s difficult to know how much the Rams can expect from their ?havoc? defensive style without him.

?It?s a small sample size with two games, but certainly we?re going to look at what we can do with our team to give us the best chance to win,? Smart said of possible defensive tweaks. ?It?s still evolving.?

They have scored 72 and 71 points in the past two games, largely with no contribution from Graham, and Smart said those who question if VCU can win without him underestimate the Rams.

?We were a possession away from it Saturday, but no question, the margin for error is significantly smaller when you take one of those guys away and even more-so when you take two of them away,? he said. ?But that?s what happens to teams when you sustain injuries. I don?t think we?re unique in that.

?There?s no necessarily replacing Briante and what he did and when Tre can?t play, there?s no one guy that can do what he does, particularly on offense. You just need other guys to do a little bit more.?

And hope, in the end, that giving Graham time to heal now pays off down the road.

?You don?t want to be in a position where you are weighing the present against the future,? Smart said of possibly keeping Graham on the bench, ?but that may be what we need to do in the coming weeks.?

While the LaSalles Explorers of seasons past were led by dominant guards like Tyreek Duren, Tyrone Garland, and Ramon Galloway, 2015 La Salle boasts one of the best and most consistent front-courts in the conference. Steve Zack and Jerrell Wright simultaneously present matchup opportunities and nightmares.

Last season VCU took advantage of opportunities and ran more than a dozen isolation plays for Treveon Graham that exposed the much slower 6-foot-11 Steve Zack. If the Rams are without Graham, VCU will be forced to go guard or forward at the four spot instead of using the incomparable hybrid game of the Freight Train. That will mean sacrificing defense or offense depending upon strategy.

Defensively, Zack?s long frame is complemented by Jerrell Wright, who?s 6-foot-8 and 255 pounds of craft and guts. Without Treveon Graham, St. Bonaventure forwards Dion Wright and Denzell Gregg combined for 29 points (12-of-16 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Being forced to choose between Jordan Burgess or Jarred Guest as complements to Mo Alie-Cox will make Wednesday?s matchup significantly more challenging.

All-in-all, La Salle?s offense is a far cry from 2013, but they have several guys, including Jordan Price, who can heat up and put the team on their back. Defensively, this is Dr. John Giannini?s best team in his eleven season tenure in Philadelphia. VCU needs to hope for the best and prepare for the worst with Treveon Graham while approaching Wednesday with that Aggressive, Confident, and Loose demeanor that has enabled HAVOC! to triumph over adversity so many times before.

THE STAR: #21 JORDAN PRICE

16.6 PPG (82-184 2PFG, 41-125 3PFG), 3.1 RPG, 2.3 APG, 3.3 TOPG

A sophomore transfer from Auburn, Jordan Price is a 6-foot-5 physical guard who thrives as a volume shooter?usually. He has games of 31, 30, 30, 28, 26, 24, and 21 points this season. He?s most effective inside the 3-point arc, and he?s occasionally prone to the demon of variance.

He has five single-digit performances including six points against Saint Joseph?s, four points on 2-of-13 shooting against Rhode Island, and two points on 1-of-11 shooting against George Mason. Price is capable of willing his team past superior opponents but he?s also capable of sinking the Explorers. Limiting him is a good start to beating La Salle.

SUPPORTING CAST

#2 Amar Stukes (G, Freshman) ? Freshman point guard! The Explorers have enough guards to keep up with HAVOC!, but it?s always a challenge visiting the Siegel Center as a rookie.

#3 Cleon Roberts (G, Sophomore) ? He?s an invaluable shooter on a team without much 3-point punch. He transferred in from Georgia Southern and is 38-of-93 from 3-point range.

#25 Jerrell Wright (F, Junior) ? VCU?s defensive rebounding has left a lot to be desired recently. Wright could go off for 10+ points on the offensive glass alone.

#0 Steve Zack (C, Junior) He?s probably the best defensive rebounder in the Atlantic 10, and he?s also an effective shot-blocker. Creating mismatches with him should be important on offense.

#23 Khalid Lewis (G, Junior) He?s a do-a-little-bit-of-everything guard, but the Explorers need more from him on offense.
