The Flyers have split their first four Atlantic 10 matchups and sit at 8-8 overall. They?re coming off an 87-81 win at Richmond on Tuesday.
When asked about Grant?s current team, Rhoades said the Flyers are tough, led by senior guard Darrell Davis and junior forward Josh Cunningham. Davis leads the team with 17 points per game. Cunningham is not far behind with an average of 15.8 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game, and has done it efficiently. He leads the A-10 and is fifth in the country in field goal percentage (69.1).
Rhoades said the Rams have to make Davis and Cunningham earn everything Friday.
?We got to be really locked in our defense in transition, don?t let them get up and down, get easy baskets,? he said. ?And then we got to a really good job, in the half court, of limiting easy shots, open shots.?
VCU is coming off one of its best second-half defensive performances of the year. The team limited Duquesne to 31.4 percent shooting in the second half, spurred by the press. Rhoades called it the best Havoc his team displayed all year.
And, as the Rams move forward, he said it gives them great confidence.
?They were talking about it, they were excited about how well it worked,? Rhoades said. ?And that?s the part of the process part you just keep sticking with. And you?re going to reap some rewards out of it, and I think we did.?
