Me and the wife are thinking of going to New York City the end of the month for a couple of days. She wants to see a play, The Producers maybe. Any tips (money saving and others) on where to stay and what to do in NYC... Thanks!

hotel pennsylvania is pretty cheap and convenient. located across the street from penn station/madison square garden. you can go to times square any morning and wait in line for broadway tickets that are discounted. so many things to do. go to wall street, empire state building, 9/11 site, central park, times square, 5th avenue so she can spend your money shopping, etc.
Here is some information on Broadway tickets
There is a corner building with the name TKTS in Time Square.
You wait in line there for Broadway tickets; these tickets are for same day shows but the money saving is worth the wait. the tickets are half price and there is a 3 dollar service charge each. The more sought after tickets might be tougher to get this way; Producers tickets being one of them.
A big money saving tip to get around the city though is subways! Taking taxi's everywhere rather than paying 2 dollars for a subway trip will add up at the end of the day. The only downside to this is that you should be a little familiar with the subway routes. you dont want to get on an uptown train when you want to go downtown. There are MTA workers in the booths that you can ask when you go underground for the subway that can help you. Trust me, this is where you can save a lot of money. Some taxi drivers like to take tourists on joy rides too when they know that they arent familiar with the city. Be careful with that to when you get into the cabs. Don't worry about asking how to get around, they get it all the time.
You might want to bring your wife down to the Soho area of the city. This is big for shopping and people watching. West Broadway is a great street to walk up and down, West Broadway between Houston (How-ston) and Canal to be exact. Your wife will enjoy the shops and there is always good eye-candy around there.
A few other things that you might want to check out is the
1.South Street Seaport, nice in the spring/summer(just south of the Brooklyn Bridge which is also a good thing to see)
2.Yankee Stadium, if you can get your girl to sit through 3.5 hours of baseball this is a great way to spend the afternoon/evening, take the "4" train all the way up to 161st street. $8 dollars round trip for the both of you, while its probably $30 by cab each way.(just to give you an idea of the cab prices)
3.Central Park-enough said
4.Empire State Building-you need to check this off the list if you are in the Big Apple.
5.Statue of Liberty
6.Museums-take your pick, plenty to fill up some more time.
7.Tribeca is nice to walk around, there is a film festival coming up that is a good time, The Tribeca Film Festival, Robert DeNiro's project.
8.St. Patricks Church
9.Rockefeller Center
The list goes on............

Upper East Side is more than likely the area he is talking about. There are all kinds of bars up there on 2nd and 3rd avenue in the 50's to the 70's.
To be honest though, there are all kinds of bars all over the city. There are good spots everywhere. The city stays open til 4am so thats another added bonus.

Blitz,you already have some good advice here.With TKTS more then likley "The Producers" won't be on the board.That you will have to buy in advance.Plays like Momma Mia won't be there either.If you want to see one of those plays just call ticketmaster and pay the price.Save on other things,splurg on Broadway.There are still a lot of good plays on the bd left that you will get 50% off.
Hotels vary.Go to priceline,travelocity,etc.There a great deals there.

Make a right out of Patties and walk up[uptown] 5th ave.NBA Store is a few blocks on the left.Walk up to[56th street] Trump Towers[where Apprentice" is filmed.
A little further up is FAO Swartz[back in buisness] toy store where "Big" was flimed.Walk into Central Park only about 500-600 yds in the central park zoo.It's a few bucks but go see the polar bears.One has the anxiety problem and does the same thing over and over.Unreal site.On your way home you'll talk more about that polar bear then half the sites.
Walk up a few more blocks and there is the Metropolitan Museum.Van Gogh collection is still on display.Call for prices.I thinks its expensive but VG's self portrait,starry nites,etc are there.You'll never see it again.
If you skip the metro go back to 52nd st.Take a bus back to Broadway or to 42nd or 43rd.
Go eat at Carmines at 44th and Broadway.Right next to Carmines is "Oodles".Great chinese food, fresh noodles made.Carmines is awesome.Italian family style.
The NY public library is near there on 42nd.Take a picture next to the famos 2 lions Pride and ahhh[forgot] Prudence???Go insde the library..into the main room.How many movies where filmed there.You'll say "I've been here".
Grand Central station is close.The UN is a few blocks further down.
Of course there is the Empire St,Ellis island,etc.Wall street

I gotta tell ya I get there about nine to ten times a summer and would not recommend the Hotel Pennsylvania. Stayed there last year and it was dirty, carpet was old and dilapidated. Neighborhood is still about 8-10 blocks from the fun. Youre right across the street from the garden yes but still not the best neighborhood Manhatten has to offer. If you are going there to holiday you are going to pay the price for a hotel but there are a few that are still worth the money. I would also suggest trying hotels dot com or whatever. Not trying to dis our other brothers suggestion I just was far from impressed.
Carnegies is over priced but absolutely yummy. I have always liked the Soho area and I have even seen a few comedy shows down in the village but I was with the wife at the time so none of the tailgunners bothered me.........actually had a gas. I absolutely love that city.

There are two ways you can go with the hotels, hotel searching on line for the less expensive or ifyou want to splurge a night or two you can go a little more upscale. I agree that Hotel Penn might be best to stay away from, it is true that it is in the middle of the city and gives you a good central point to start from each day but there are other choices you on the same $ level that might be a better option. IMO Marriot in TSquare and the Hitlon on Avenue of the Americas are some of the larger hotel chains that are nice.
if you want to go a little more upscale in the hotel category try the Hudson Hotel, Soho Grand, Tribeca Grand or Trump. They are a little more trendy with the trendy bar areas, don't know your style.
