mw, thanks for the correction.

ND, I tend to agree. Scott's one-sided bias is a little off-putting. After a while I start hoping Auburn crushes them just to inspire a little humility.

OK, I'm placing my second wager of the new season before the line goes down:

5* Clemson +3.5

Write-up and analysis to come during game week.

Too funny guys. I may be one sided in my writings but i do respect AU and I am being honest in my writings and not exaggerating. The truth of the matter is this USC team is LOADED, its just too bad Carson Palmer is not returning, because QB is the only real question mark with this team. I am not being a homer, but this team really is loaded. If AU beats USC, and the USC QB is not the reason or major turnovers, then i truly think AU can/will win the National Championship.

If i was AU what advantages do they have besides home crowd and "maybe" weather. They have the best LB's and they should blitz them every down from the start of the game and i think even give up big plays because of it. GET INTO THE HEAD OF LIENHART and never let him create confidence. I would also throw the ball a lot on offense to stretch the USC defense because USC will stack the line and it "might" be hard to run against a stacked line. I also think AU needs to score fast and early, and put pressure on USC. USC will turn the ball over, i am almost certain/afraid they will. So put pressure on USC. Those are the keys i see AU winning the game.

However, the only real weakness for USC is QB, and that is mostly because he is very inexperienced. Our running backs are prob. just as talented than AU's (yes they are that good) but most of them are inexperienced (which may lead to fumbles). Also anytime a FROSH RB is in game, AU should bring the house, because he will have no clue on how to pick up and block a blitz. I think USC has few more advantages or there are "few" more AU weaknesses to exploit, but that does not mean USC will win the game. USC has to take advantage of these matchups. The biggest of them all being USC WR vs AU DB's. Sorry if i sound bias when pointing them out, but you will see AUG. 30th if i am right or wrong. Believe me, the USC coaches know the same things i am talking about. CHOW just said at practice yesterday that he will not be conservative with this new QB because of the talent we have at WR. (he was conservative with palmer against KSU @KSU) So lets see what happens.

On the USC Insider radio show, Carroll just said comparing where the offense is at this point in camp, with where it was at this point last year, "there is no comparison". He continued, saying this year's offense is "way ahead of where we were last year at this point". I like the sound of that.

One last note. Yesterday in practice Pete brought in noise makers and the band to creat havic for players and get used to Jordon Hare Stadium. Unfortunately it was the first practice where many of the WR dropped balls. (hope its not a sign) On the positive note, Lienhart had another impressive day passing, which was a huge concern before fall practice of mine.

I guess Wash. St. could say that with Gesser gone and Iowa could with Brad Banks gone and Iowa St. could say that with Seneca Wallace gone and I could go on and on. The point is get over it ,Palmer is gone and every major program has to deal with star players moving on to the NFL. Quit living in the past with regards to the QB position and stop making excuses before the game starts with regards to your QB. Every team has to deal with major loses at key positions. The sign of a great program are the ones who move on and are able to replace them with a great recruiting class. You said USC had a great class last year so lets see how good it was. Fair and square.

I don't quite understand your post. USC starting an inexperienced QB @AU against a very tough AU DEFENSE, is a pretty big problem to have. The reason i said its too bad Palmer is not here is because USC upgraded in talent or has gotten better at every single position than last year except QB. Its just unfortunate and no team in the nation that went 10-2 (toughest schedule in nation) can say they upgraded at every position except 1. Thats a reason to get excited about USC, but the QB position is very very important. SO it is huge question mark on how the game will go. USC has clear advantage with WR against the AU DB"s, but who gets them the ball? The QB! Which happens to be a question mark. So yes, its too bad we lost Palmer, cuz if he had one more year, USC this year would beat every team in the country by min. 20pts. No joke!

I would not make any excuses if USC lost and i know there is good chance USC can lose. I am just glad USC is playing AU and not a div. 2 school. USC does not try to win national championships through playing cupcakes like most teams in the country do. IF AU beats USC, they are good team, if USC beats AU, AU still a good team. No excuses for USC if they lose, but it be unfortunate to lose because of turnovers (which i fear).

Scott:

I don't want to nitpick, but how can you say USC will be better at RB, or even as good? They put 3 tailbacks into the NFL, if memory serves. Fargas, McCullough, and McKenzie. I'm well aware of their awesome recruiting at every position, including RB. But I have to think there will be a dropoff for now and maybe some mental gaffes, considering how limited their game experience is.

Best of luck, man.

Give me a break. You are the most narrow-minded fan i have ever seen. What SEC, Pac 10, Big 12, Big Ten team is not loaded by their own standards before the season starts. If you think USC is the only "loaded" football team, you better wake up and not bet this year. I'm not even going to respond to your homer comment, you could be deaf, dumb, and blind and you would no that answer.

Good thing the QB doesn't touch the ball every offensive play because if he did you would be in big trouble. Leinny will be lucky to have his head on his shoulders after this game. I also think our QB could easily get hurt in this game. That would even things out. 2QBS without a college snap going head to head. You laugh but i could happen. Your RB statement being as talented as ours, i'll let the our four of them decide that on Aug 30th

Keys to the game

Keys to the game

Auburn keys to Success...

1) Establish running game
2) Campbell passes well on early downs
3) tackle well on defense
4) take away SC running game.

USC keys to Success...

1) Establish running game
2) Get their "playmakers" out in space. Look for mismatch in coverage. Keep passing game simple early on.
3) Sell out to stop the run, make JC beat them.

For both teams, special teams could be huge if this is a low scoring and close game. It was not a major factor last year but normally is a major part of the game.

wareagle,

You are a solid capper and are objective which is what capping is all about. Our friend Scott at USC will lose a ton of money betting with his heart instead of his head. Regardless of who is playing or who you are betting being a homer is a recipe for disaster. Scott is a rookie when it comes to this, all his comments show that he is a rookie at capping when you are being a homer. He will only rub more and more people the wrong way with his homer comments, but he will learn on this forum as we all have. I won't be responding to any of his posts anymore as I only subject myself to responding to cappers on this forum and not homers, plain and simple. I think 99% of the people on this site would support that.

Get my e-mail from Jack if you want. I write a college football column every Friday starting next week and I will send you the link. Take care,

When I started this thread I'd hoped for some intelligent discussion regarding the upcoming college season. It went very well for a while, but finally it somehow degenerated into a debate about who would win the Auburn/USC game. I thank all of you who contributed to the discussion.

I am starting a new thread regarding the upcoming weekend, but just to complete this thread I want to let all who are interested what games I am already on. Write-ups will be in my new thread.

Kansas St -27.5
Auburn -3
Clemson +3.5
Miss St +5
Ole Miss -13
FSU -14.5

Take care, everyone, and thanks again for your interest and especially for your participation in this thread.

USC is more talented at RB than last year. YES all 3 RB are in the NFL now, but the RB we have on the roster are all more talented. Reggie Bush is a frosh who is just as exciting as Mike Vick was at V-Tech. I have seen him with my own eyes. Don't believe me? Am I being a homer? Check the link and see what a"non" homer person says.

http://espn.go.com/ncf/columns/feldman_bruce/1591294.html

You want more? How about Reggie Bush (freshman) already making the top 100 players in college football and has not even played a down.

http://msn.espn.go.com/ncf/preview03/columns/feldman_bruce/1599522.html

Along with Reggie is Hershal Dennis (soph. who saw very little time last year who Pete Carroll said was better than Fargas but Fargas was a senior and Hershall was a frosh), a top 5 RB out of high school, and then 2 other top 10 RB out of high school. LOADED WITH TALENT, and these RB's are better than last years. Trust me, i hve seen them in practice and comparing them to Fargas from last year. Only difference is they might fumble. In NCAA, frosh can play RB and be very successful. Ex. Clarrett and many others.

You call me a homer, but i think i explain and back up all points well. I have yet seen as detailed explanation on why AU will win or what AU can do against USC. I have showed possible scenarios where USC can exploit AU and beat them. Call me a homer or a rookie, i don't care, i don't just post USC will win and thats it. I explain why i think so, and i does not make me a homer. You can disagree all you want. I think my posts are good for madjacks because if someone believes my reasonings or they make sense, then they might put more on USC or less on AU. And all my reasonings are valid. Just for your information, last year i went 6-1 ATS betting on USC. Only game i lost was the Kansas St. game. I of course would "never" bet against USC, but i don't "always" bet on USC. 6 games last year i did not bet USC.

I am 70% confident USC will beat AU on the 30th. I was 50% confident before fall practice started this summer. I have been very impressed at practices and from things i been told about each team. IF USC loses, i will be back here if anyone wants to tell me anything about the game or make me eat crow. I don't care. I am being honest with all my writings and i think I back them up with good data.

Wareagle, i agree with your each teams successes except look for USC to come passing. Chow will pass the ball i think early on and he said he will not play conservative.

FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In case anyone here is interested in reading about the 110 play USC scrimmage. Might help with capping the USC vs AU game. Yesterday USC had its last scrimmage but i did not attend but here is a very good write-up on it. I think USC first O went against 1st D and 2nd D. But i dunno for sure. I can find out more detail tom. if anyone cares to know.

USC quarterback Matt Leinart threw a pair of touchdown passes, wide receiver Keary Colbert caught 2 TDs and running back LenDale White ran for 2 scores to highlight the Trojans' final pre-season intrasquad scrimmage on Howard Jones Field on Friday (Aug. 22).

Leinart, USC's starter, was 16-of-20 for 250 yards. His scoring tosses went 34 yards to wide receiver Steve Smith and 23 yards to Colbert. In 3 pre-season scrimmages this fall, he hit 75.4% of his passes (43-of-57) with 6 touchdowns.

White's TD runs were 2 and 15 yards.

Quarterbacks Matt Cassel (3-of-4, 26 yards) and Brandon Hance (2-of-5, 18 yards) also threw TDs. Colbert caught an 11-yarder from Cassel and wide receiver Mike Williams grabbed a 12-yarder from Hance.

The other scores came on a wide receiver Chris McFoy's 30-yard return of a blocked punt, tailback Andre Woodert's 7-yard run and placekicker Ryan Killeen's 34-yard field goal.

Colbert had 4 catches for 49 yards and Williams had 6 for 50 yards. McFoy (87 yards), wide receiver Greig Carlson (26 yards) and tight end Dominique Byrd (57 yards) each added 4 receptions.

Tailback Reggie Bush rushed for 84 yards on 14 carries and tailback Hershel Dennis added 39 yards on 5 tries.

Defensively, cornerback John Walker had 5 tackles and blocked a punt, safety Kyle Matthews also had 5 stops and defensive tackle Mike Patterson had 3 tackles for losses. Safety Mike Ross returned an interception 66 yards and linebacker also had an interception.

The 110-play scrimmage was conducted like an actual game, beginning with the team staying at a local hotel on Thursday evening, where they had meals and meetings, then busing to the game and conducting pre-game and halftime meetings in the locker room.

"We accomplished so many things in the last 24 hours, starting with the whole process at the hotel all the way through this mock game," said third-year USC head coach Pete Carroll. "We made it as realistic as we could."

honolulu, Hi, USA
Scotty - Your points are well taken and has given me pause to reconsider my leaning towards Auburn. Both teams are loaded and I believe the game will come down to some intangible factor. Another thing that you left out in your discussion which in my mind is an important factor - coaching. And that edge, in my unbiased opinion goes to USC. Carroll and Chow make for a terrific duo. Anyways, unless I feel very strongly for one side, I think I'll be passing. Good Luck to you & ND2002horns. It will be one heck of a game!
