Like Keeneland, you have to downgrade wire to wire winners at Sportsman's. One Tuff Fox was supposed to give War Emblem pressure on the front end in the Illy Derby but he scratched; leaving War Emblem as lone speed. Due to the unusual configuration of Sportsman's, speed is deadly there. Repent really had no chance. I suppose there is a price point in which he's value; its just hard to point where. Maybe at 17-1 he's worth a flyer. At 10-1 he isnt; I guess you could make a slight correlation to Spend A Buck, who won the Jersey Derby with a huge figure over little competition back in '85. It is hard to imagine Baffert being almost 20-1 with the horse who has the top Beyer in their last race. There does seem to be some other speed in the race, but I wouldn't be shocked to see him in front heading into the far turn. But...the Derby is about sizable payoffs and while I'm not keying him, I hate to talk anyone off a 17-1 shot.
