i watched o'reilly tonight & he was talking about how some people objected to the u.s. lowering the flag in honor of the pope's death.

first of all it doesn't bother me one way or the other whether the flag was lowered or not.

but if i had to choose whether i agree with this or not......i have to say that i'm against lowering the flag.it was never lowered when other popes died & i feel that this will set a bad precedent for future deceased foreign luminaries flag lowering.

i think the american flag should only be lowered to honor a deceased american & not a person from another country. the only exception that i would make for this would be for winston churchill (i don't know if the flag was lowered in his honor).

i would like to hear what other madjacker's think about this.

i heard that the flag was actually lowered for johnny cochrane...not the pope....

if not for johnny, one of our greatest sports legends would be spending the rest of his life behind bars....

we should lower the flag every time a beloved celebrity beats the rap....o.j...bobby blake...kobie...

michael jackson will be so honored when he`s acquitted....

it`s ashamed that scott peterson never got a sitcom.... or could shoot the 3....

kind of a salute to best damned judicial system in the world...

all kidding aside,it`s not a big deal to me.....i can see lowering the flag in respect of great foreign leaders that were allies or made major accomplishments in the world.....i`m not offended...

ala churchill...or anwar sadat...or the pope...

the issue is being raised because he`s a traditionalist...not a politically correct pope..

of course i understand the can of worms that is being opened...

who decides?...and considering the absolute polar opposite world view that exists between republicans and democrats...liberals and conservatives....elite intellectuals and the working class.....hollywood and nashville(lol)....

that might be a hard thing to agree on...

nothing`s easy in a country that is ideologically ripped right down the middle...

btw...bill clinton represented at the vatican....and something tells me if bill were the pres.,he`d be o.k. with the flag thing.....

i kinda` like clinton..always have.....maybe i`m losing it....

I am like you AR I don't really care if it was lowered or not.
Really don't have opinion on if it was correct or not.

Finally watched the factor myself last night after abstaining during his and networks continuous coverage of Pope.

Saw some interesting videos on Fox earlier in day of new hit tv show in Iraq of terrorists confessions.Wonder what Saddam thought of Kurd being elected. He got to view elections on tv.
What a turn around in 2 years.

I think this is a real trivial issue. I don't see any need to lower the flag for the Pope but it is a nice thought I guess. I would tend to keep this symbolism reserved for Americans as the flag is a symbol of our specific country.

I think respect for a world leader and a person who really sought peace is an okay thing.

Going on what Mr Christo said--what is your religion? Is there someone in your religion who has impacted the world like this past Pope? If so, I would be all for honoring that person with the same respect.

But, I don't really care either way on the flag lowering. I don't see any harm in it, and I don't see any gain out of it.

I was being sarcastic guys, saying that football was my religion.

Sorry, probably not all that appropriate.

(I bet gw thought I was trying to promote some weird-arsed, virgin-bashing cult! :D)

fwiw, I have no problem at all with repecting a world leader who did as you said, dawgball.
I've actually seen the guy live...about 15 years ago I guess when he came to Australia. (I went to a Catholic primary school).
Seeing his funeral live on 3 out of our 4 FTA channels is a little much tho, imo.

I agree that the media coverage was overkill. When the main networks start interrupting regualr programming for it is when I say enough. The 24 hour news channels can show it all day long if they would like. There's not much out there that is MORE newsworthy, IMO. Maybe equally but not more.

mr c.....i have to agree that football has engendered a religious- like fervor in many of us....

summertime seems purgatory-esque...it`s a dead spot in between football seasons...

btw...the question on religion was artfully dodged,my buddy...

you are a tough out...that`s why i like you..

looking forward to the nfl season... :mj14:

...sorry, gw, I honestly didn't realise it was a serious question. (I was completely serious about the football thing! :D)

I am officially religion-less. (Is there such a term?...Agnostic/atheist, take your pick).

I seem to be one of the very few people in the world willing to trust my own judgement and act on it in the best interests of myself, family and friends.
God's laws?...I've got civil and criminal codes to adhere to, not to mention my morals/concience.
I need 'strength' or 'guidence', I talk to someone I trust.
I dunno, it just doesn't seem that hard to work out?

Hey, there's a chance I'm going to spend eternity paying for my hedonistic ways, but there's an equal (or much greater actually! :D) chance that people who live for God will end up rotting in the ground just like me. :mj14:

PS. That doesn't sound great, does it. No wonder people hope for an afterlife! :cursin:

PPS. You should consider moving to Australia, gw, where the new NFL season is but an AFL season away ;)
