Need some advice. It appears that the water heater is done. I do not want tankless. Where is typically the best place/value to buy one of these? Not interested in the cheapest, just middle of the road and good quality. Any advice on do's and don'ts is appreciated.

Looks like tomorrow will be spent figuring this out. I learned today how to shut off water for the whole house. Helps to have the freaking key to unlock the cap.

OK
Any big box store should have them, sometimes the utility company will have deals on them. Does help to have a friend who can do plumbing work. The guys in my local hardware store will give you instructions on what and how to do it. Sometimes I take a picture into them, and say "I need to fix or replace this' gl

Thanks, Turk. That helps. I've got my "handyman" coming out tomorrow, guess he can do it after I pick which one from the store that I want.

Why do you think it's done? Is it electric or gas? Just curious, I though mine was toast once, it turned out that during a high wind/rain storm, water extinguished the pilot on my gas water heater

I came home and water was flowing over the sides. I turned off the spigot on top, but it continued to flow down the sides, non-stop. I then turned off the gas. I don't understand why once I turned the water off on top it was still overflowing? So, then I had to turn it off for the whole house....with the help of my neighbor.

Then, in reading about it, it says rust colored water is a sign of it being at the end of its life which I've had on and off for a bit. I was about to call the city and ask if they knew what it was about. Now I now. It is also probably the original, which means it's 13 years old, which is at the end of life for a gas one.

sounds like you are correct - like was said above, menards, home depot, etc.... will get you where you want to be

Install should be relatively inexpensive - it sucks, but it happens to everyone at some point

Best of luck

I know Valu sells them. I know you need it right now,but if you watch for their sale on them you can take your receipt back and they will give you the difference back on what you paid the regular price on.Will save you a few bucks.:0074

Just bought one of these. Triple the cost of a standard water heater but will more than pay for its self with savings in a 10 year period.

Save up to $325** a year in energy costs! This revolutionary GE ENERGY STAR? qualified hybrid electric water heater utilizes advanced technology to pull heat from surrounding air, but uses up to 62% less energy than traditional electric water heaters. And that could significantly reduce electric bills. Experience the future of water heating efficiency and performance with the latest innovation from GE.

Thanks everyone. Didn't want to spend as much for a tankless. Went middle of the road from Home Depot and had my plumber install it. He charged $175 to get it at Home Depot, drive back to my house and install it. I thought that was very reasonable, he charges $75 an hour. I probably would have puchased a little better quality one if I had time to research it more and looki at my options. But, this should last several years and natural gas here is really cheap, so the costs are minimal. I do appreciate everyone's help, you guys are the best!:toast:
