Arizona State was supposed to have a crack redshirt
freshman point guard this season, but he didn?t make
grades. Way to go, Smokin? Herb Sendek. Good
recruiting move. Good tutoring job. So they have two
players playing the position who aren?t true points.
As one observer puts it, ?Defenses can sit back and
dig in. The flow of the game quickly dissolves into
an always non-entertaining contest of "who can hold
the ball the longest before taking a poorly contested
jumper.".ASU is one of the worst ball-handling teams
in the country ? they lose 15 turnovers per game.
They are not aggressive on defense, forcing few
turnovers themselves. ?King and Colvin have turnover
rates over 30. Guards should not turnover the ball
every third possession,? says the ASU observer.
No, they should not. Colvin has been in and out of
the lineup lately for disciplinary reasons. ASU?s
big-stiff 7-foot center was suspended for this game
after throwing a punch is his last, not that he?s
any good, but at least he eats space on a poor
rebounding team. Fresno State comes down from the
mountain at Boise, and into good cardio situation
with extra red blood cells built up at the high
altitude. They got close at Oregon recently and
see an opportunity here.
