Game Preview
Rangers (23-21-4-3) vs. Boston Bruins (26-13-3-7)
January 23, 2002 - Madison Square Garden (7:00 PM ET)

TV: MSG Network (6:30 PM ET)
Radio: WBBR 1130 AM or on-line

The New York Rangers seek their first home win of 2002 tonight when they begin a four-game homestand at Madison Square Garden against the Boston Bruins.

New York snapped a nine-game winless streak (0-7-1-1) Tuesday with a 5-4 victory over the New York Islanders, but has not won at home since defeating the Ottawa Senators, 3-2, on December 23.

The Rangers erased a three-goal deficit Tuesday as Theoren Fleury scored his second goal of the night with 11:58 left to snap a 4-4 tie. He is expected to skate in his 1,000th NHL game Wednesday.

New York goaltender Mike Richter stopped all 35 shots he faced in place of rookie Dan Blackburn, who gave up four goals on seven shots in the opening 8:48.

The Rangers are 3-6-2 in their last 11 home games and own a 13-8-2-1 mark at Madison Square Garden this season.

Boston has four losses in its last five games, but three of those have come in overtime, including a 4-3 setback to the St. Louis Blues on Monday. Sergei Samsonov, Benoit Hogue and defenseman Sean O'Donnell scored for Boston, which just 1-for-30 on the power play over the past seven contests.

The Bruins have dropped their last two road games, but are 8-2-0-3 in their last 13 contests away from home. Center Joe Thornton has six goals and seven assists in his last 11 games.

New York posted a 2-1 victory at Boston on October 27 as Fleury tallied in overtime. That win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bruins for the Rangers, who are 8-2-2 in 12 games against Northeast Division opponents this season.

Teammates take Stock in fight

Bruins Notebook/by Stephen Harris

Tuesday, January 22, 2002

Sitting on the bench and watching the St. Louis Blues inexorably steal away the Bruins' momentum in the second period yesterday, P.J. Stock knew what his job was and asked coach Robbie Ftorek to let him go do it. All Stock had to do was go out and trade monster punches with 6-foot-4, 215-pound St. Louis tough guy Reed Low.

``He wasn't playing very much, but he wanted to go out against that kid Low,'' Ftorek said. ``He wanted to get things going, because things were dead. We were flat. He knows his role. He knew he had to do it.''

And Stock, even if he maybe took a few more shots than he landed in his latest long, grizzly fight, did his job well. Inspired by Stock's willingness to go to war, the B's reawakened and quickly got the go-ahead goal from Benoit Hogue. The lead didn't last, as the Blues won, 4-3, in overtime, but Stock certainly did his job.

``That was a huge lift for our team,'' Bruin Bill Guerin said. ``That was a great fight and the timing was perfect. . . . It was great. It was exactly what we needed.''

=====

First line shakeup

Stock played just as many shifts in the third period - one - as erstwhile top center Jozef Stumpel, who was replaced in his spot between Guerin and Martin Lapointe by Hogue.

``Stump has been playing very well,'' Ftorek said. ``(Yesterday) I just didn't see the juice from that line so I thought I'd change it.'' . . .

The B's power play was disorganized and went 0-for-10 in the two losses to St. Louis.

``I think we're over overanalyzing, trying to do too many X's and O's,'' Guerin said. ``I think we have to simplify our power play, get shots, use our size and strength to crash the net and get some ugly goals.'' . . .

=====

The Bruins went to New York yesterday afternoon and will face the Rangers tonight. Then it's on to Ottawa for a meeting with the Senators on Thursday - a rematch, perhaps, after the teams' fight-filled affair at the FleetCenter last Thursday. . . .

A note that reveals how much easier it is to play for an East Coast team: The B's play only two more games this season outside the Eastern time zone - at Colorado on Feb. 11 and Vancouver on Feb. 12. Western Conference teams routinely criss-cross time zones. . .

First time I used this website (Bruins radio site) so I'm not 100% sure if this is accurate from the teams or if this is their "projected" line-up. As always, if I hear something different, I will post ASAP.
