Vegas Sports Insiders

MLB Baseball Pick

Wednesday, April 7, 2004
MLB BASEBALL
Anaheim @ Seattle
Pick: OVER 8
Time: 10:00 PM EST

Today the Vegas Sports Insiders look for Anaheim and Seattle to score over 8 runs, when they matchup in Seattle.

Jarrod Washburn is looking forward to re-establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in the American League. Even if he isn't considered the best hurler on his team anymore. The left-hander will make his first start of 2004 when the Anaheim Angels resume their season-opening three-game series with the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field.

Washburn, who went 18-6 with a 3.15 ERA in 2002, helping the Angels win their first-ever world championship, struggled mightily last season. The 29-year-old left-hander went 10-15 with a 4.43 ERA in 2003, pitching a career-high 207 1-3 innings despite a variety of nagging injuries.

Washburn went 0-3 in his last four starts last year, as Anaheim failed to reach the postseason. This year, he was displaced by free agent right-hander Bartolo Colon as the staff ace and Opening Day starter.

Slugger Vladimir Guerrero also made a strong first impression in his Angels' debut, belting a two-run double to go with a walk and a run scored. Troy Glaus belted a pair of homers for Anaheim, which ran out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back.

New Mariners shortstop Rich Aurilia had a two-run double in the eighth inning as Seattle rallied for four runs before Francisco Rodriguez restored order with 1 1-3 innings of scoreless relief.

National Sports Advisors

MLB Baseball Pick

MLB BASEBALL
San Diego @ Los Angeles
Pick: San Diego -115
Time: 10:10 PM EST

Today the National Sports Advisors look for San Diego to win as -115 point favorites, when they matchup with the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles hopes that Jeff Weaver can regain the form he showed before his disappointing stint in New York as the Dodgers play the finale of their three game series with the San Diego Padres.

A bust with the Yankees, Weaver, a California native, is eager to get his career back on track with Los Angeles, a team he grew up watching.

The Dodgers acquired Weaver, two minor league pitchers and cash from New York for right-hander Kevin Brown in December. That marked the end of 1 1/2 tumultuous seasons for Weaver, where he didn't come close to reaching expectations.

The Yankees acquired Weaver from Detroit in 2002 after he had gone 6-8 with a 3.18 ERA for the struggling Tigers in 17 starts. He was 5-3 with a 4.04 ERA with New York the remainder of that season in 15 games (eight starts), but went 7-9 with a 5.99 ERA last season in 32 appearances (24 starts).

The teams split the first two games of the series, as San Diego won the season opener 8-2. Los Angeles rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Padres 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Adrian Beltre hit the tying two-run homer in the seventh inning, and pinch-hitter Robin Ventura singled home the winning run in the ninth for the Dodgers, who avoided dropping the first two games of the season for the second straight year.

AAA Sports

Dallas +140 : The Stars rebounded from a poor first half of the season to have the best record in the west during the second half. They have a decided edge in nets with Turco vs Aebischer, and are healthier than the Avs, who have key players either missing or playing hurt........The Avs have four great players, but are very thin after that...the Stars are deeper and tougher, and made two key aquisitions at the trade deadline, getting both V.Bure and Corson, who have both been very effective. Selanne was a bust and Kariya, who didn't do much, is now injured....

Calgary +150 : Can Kiprusoff be this year's Giguere? He set a modern day record for goals against average at 1.69 , and gives the Flames a decided edge in goal. As well, the Flames have been playing playoff style hockey for the past 20 games or so just to make the playoffs...while the Canucks have had to endure the distractions of the Bertuzzi incident. Naslund has not been the same since Bertuzzi has been sidelined, while Iginla was heating it up, leading the league in goals scored once again....
