WVU (-28) over Maryland
Senior Geno Smith has nine incompletions in 75 attempts and has thrown for 734 yards and nine touchdowns, leading the nation's third-ranked offense (612.0 yards per game). He has not been sacked one time this year. Thats compared to Maryland stating a true freshman. This Terp team is young and untested in a place as difficult to play as WVU. The WVU offense is too explosive to allow Maryland to stay in this game. The only way they stay in the game is if WVU shuts it down as they have been doing in the second half. This second half play has bothered WVU coaches and it almost cost them last year in this same game. The WVU defense is built to get on top and rush. This is very good because Maryland is only converting on abouty 38% of third downs. That gives WVU the ball and that means they have the ability to get on top and apply the pressure. Looking over these two teams it is not as if either has played tough comp. Maryland needed a big come back to make it look close against UConn. WVU has just been blowing the doors off bad teams. WVU is not looking ahead to Wake so I think they have a lot of focus in todays match up. Maryland is just not ready, they are young and not ready for WVU's offense. Weather might play a bit of a factor but the quick short passes are not ging to be a problem in the rain. WVU runs a lot of those short crossing routes and they have the speed to make big plays after the catch. Maryland does not have the secondary to stay with WVU WRs. This has to be a Heisman numbers game. If Coach Holg wants that trophy associated with WVU its games like today that offer the oppertunity to put up big numbers. Get all over them quick and wanting to finish the game keeps the WVU offense driving while Maryland fails to convert and has to become a passing team to try to get points on the board. Maryland being a passing team puts to much on the true freshman QB and drives stall. As long as the hammer stays down WVU should walk away wih a convincing win.
