The surging Pack are laying a little more than a field goal in this one, but they're going to lay the wood on this emotionally down Wake Forest that blew a large fourth quarter lead last Saturday to Clemson to fall for the first time this year. The hangover will tough for Wake to overcome and the Wolpack, fresh off of two home upset wins over Florida State and Boston College, will win this game by at least 10 points.
N.C. State's season was heading straight south a few weeks back after a home upset loss to Akron and a blowout defeat at Southern Miss. But the insertion of quarterback Daniel Evans into the starting lineup has sparked Chuck Amato's club to produce the wins over the nationally ranked Seminoles and Eagles. The suddenly confident Pack enter today's game in sole possesion of first place in the ACC's Atlantic Division with their toughest remaining conference games being at home against Georgia Tech and later at Clemson.
Evans, a redshirt sophomore who impressed his coaches in mop-up duty at Southern Miss, is 28-of-53 for 369 yards, four TDs and one INT as a starter. Penalties and a whopping 10 turnovers killed the Pack in their 1-2 start to the year. But in the last two wins, they have just one turnover and have drastically reduced the yellow flags. Evans' three TD passes against the Noles went to three different receivers (John Dunlap has caught the game winner in both games) and the Pack has an up-the-field runner in Andre Brown (6.3 yards per carry).
N.C. State will be able to move the football on this Wake team that piled up impressive defensive numbers beating up on cupcakes Liberty and Duke while beating three other teams - Syracuse, Ole Miss and UConn - which are all having sub-par seasons. The Tigers exposed the Deacs late last week as the Tigers outscored the Deacons 24-0 in the fourth quarter. It was a crushing loss and Jim Grobe's team, which had been called into question for playing such a light schedule, won't be able to bounce back.
This Wake team lost its two best offensive players, quarterback Ben Mauk in the first game and running back Micah Andrews in the third contest, before September was halfway through. Their replacements haven't been up to the task as Wake ran for just 31 yards last week against Clemson. The Pack have a solid run defense and they'll stuff this surprisingly weak Deacs' ground game and force quarterback Riely Skinner into mistakes.
Last year, N.C State got sorry quarterback play (that had been the norm since the Philip Rivers' area ended) at Wake as the Deacons returned two interceptions for scores in an eight-point win over N.C. State. Well, it's a new day in Raleigh where with Evans under center, the Pack is playing with renewed confidence and enthusiasm. The home team has covered eight of the last 10 games and the Wolfpack faithful had Carter-Finley rocking last game. For the time being, the fickle Wolfpack fans are off Amato's back and he has a new quarterback to thank for such. N.C. State will play well and the Pack will score this win and cover.
