Just found out yesterday I've been cut to part time at my job. Some others weren't as lucky there, but that's not much of a comfort overall. Luckily, we are in good financial condition due to my wife's career and aggressively paying down debt for years, and hopefully I can figure something out sooner than later. There are options out there, a couple things I had considered a while back, but as everyone knows it's a tough time to be looking.

Upside includes a better looking lawn and an improved golf game (we had already paid our golf membership...). Downside is the blow to financial security, and bleak prospects right now.

I know there are other Minnesota guys out there looking around...maybe we can start a support club at the cheapest happy hour we can find and compare notes? Anyway, just thought I'd post - I thought my job was in pretty good shape, and I guess this is just a reminder to everyone to stay prepared for the unexpected.

Even in these desperate times, I can't see a guy like you being under-employed long! I would hire you in a second. Enjoy the time and go play a little Golf:)

No idea what you do, but gl going forward.

As to being cut to part time, isn't that BS. If you get part time can't you not now collect unemployment? I'd tell them to fck off and full time or I'm gonna sit on my ass and get unemployment. Unless you are a rocket scientist isn't full time unemployment going to be about what you will make part time? With no work?

I have no experience in this, but I would think it's just a cheap way for them to avoid unemployment.

Totally agree. These big companies are starting to
go completely part time labor force so they can
avoid benefits and unemployment compensation.

Sorry to hear it, Chad. Sounds like you and your wife took personally responsibility seriously prior to being desperate. This is when that is going to pay huge dividends.

On BDB's post: Do you receive the same amount of unemployment if you "voluntarily" leave your job?

And I guarantee that the expectations for your productivity won't go down much.

Thanks for all the support and well wishes. I have a lot of planning and fact-finding to do over the next few days, regarding options for displacement, part time/unemployment, etc. I think one relatively new advantage to staying and working part time is that now employers have to cover half of the cobra insurance for workers who lose it and remain - but it's possible that could be with or without part time. I also have heard that for workers that are dramatically cut hours, that there are unemployment benefits to help make up the difference, to a certain point. Of course nowhere near what I was making, but it would of course help.

Probably the bigger picture concern is what do I really want to do moving forward. My career field is not a good place right now and extremely competitive, and much of my experience is in print media and design - most recently newspapers, one of the worst suffering fields of all. I do have wide-ranging experience, and lots of it, but my age will hinder things somewhat, if I'm being realistic. There are new programs thanks to the stimulus package for situations like mine, and I might take advantage of training or education assistance and plans. Hard to say at this point.

Again, appreciate the kind words, everyone. Probably my favorite part of Mad Jacks, how we all can band together when someone has a rough patch.

The money in your field right now is taking an existing newspaper and making them an online paper. If you have the skills to design a site and manage where the content is placed, you could seek them out instead of them seeking you out.....another option is to go out on your own and contract your work to them.

Hang in there. Try to stay busy with golf and other projects while looking for work. I have been off since Sept. '08. The boredom can drive you crazy at times. I'm in Michigan so me and a few thousand or so of us are all looking for a job. It seems like most companies are gun shy about hiring anybody right now and if they are hiring they have tens of thousands of resumes to sift through for only a few openings.

With all the extenstions I think Michigan is up to a total of 79 weeks of unemployment for individuals. Sounds ridiculous, but the job market is downright awful here. Good luck & keep searching.

Some of u guys act like these companies are running just fine and are getting a kick out of cutting back or laying people off. Sometimes staying part time is a good thing and a good company will remember ur sacrifice when things get better. Companies can't just keep a work force just to keep everyone happy. Times are tough.

Raymond, there is a reason why when all the building trades get together and giggle they say the concrete finishers rate just below the laborers when it comes to intelligence.
