Hiller to start; Delmas, Fryar questionable

September 06, 2007 16:25PM

The first bit of news from today's practice wasn't unexpected -- Tim Hiller will get the nod at quarterback Saturday against Indiana, ahead of Thomas Peregrin.

Coach Bill Cubit said Hiller knows what he has to do to keep the job -- presumably win and not leave open targets unfound. In Cubit's words, "take responsibility and take charge."

Drew Burdi is also back practicing. He looked good late in today's practice -- quick feet, with a live arm -- and Cubit said whether Burdi or Peregrin would relieve Hiller, should he struggle or be injured, would depend on the situation.

The second bit of news caught me off guard. Cubit said whether or not safety Louis Delmas and cornerback Londen Fryar play Saturday is "to be determined." Both suffered injuries against West Virginia, Cubit said, though WMU's coach, normally fairly open about his team's bumps and bruises, was mum on what the injuries were.

Neither practiced, donning red pull-overs instead while spending time on the exercise bike.

I'm thinking one of two things here: Both aren't going to play and Cubit doesn't want Indiana to know it; or, they are going to play and he doesn't want the Hoosiers to know where they're hurting.

In both cases, I understand why Cubit is suddenly so quiet. If Delmas doesn't play, though, I'm picking Indiana in this one.

Finally, kicker Mike Jones will take the first kickoff Saturday, ahead of walk-on Chris Kelly. If it's short boot, expect a change.

updates on Hiller, Delmas and Fryar in Friday's Gazette and complete pregame coverage in Saturday's paper.
